Charles Eugene "Gene" Smith III, 50, of Pompano Beach, died Wednesday, October 2nd, 2013. Gene was born the elder of identical twins to the late Charles Eugene Jr & Charyl Smith, Aug 5, 1963, in Fort Lauderdale. He graduated from Pompano Beach High School & was married to Melanie Petrone. Gene served his country in the United States Coast Guard. At his first station in Alaska he received medals for serving through one of the coldest winters on record & his help with the Exxon Valdez oil spill clean-up. He was also stationed in Los Angeles, Miami, NY Harbor & Coast Guard HQ in DC. Gene was a photojournalist; his work was published in several magazines & newspapers. Gene was an avid music lover & very good on the guitar. He organized bands to play Coast Guard events at nearly every station he served. He enjoyed traveling, boating, fishing & shooting. Prior to USCG, Gene was a Boy Scout camp counselor, teaching camping skills & marksmanship. Memorial service 11 am Sat, Oct 19th at Calvary Chapel in Fort Lauderdale. Burial will be at 1 pm Sun, Oct 20th at the family cemetery in Zephyrhills.
