November 11, 1928 - October 19, 2013 Passed away in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida Born the second of four sons to Edna and Earl Quinn on November 11, 1928 in Oil City, Pennsylvania. While attending Oil City High School, Don was the quarterback of the football team. Don left Oil City to attend the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York. In 1950, after three years of study ashore and one year at sea, Don graduated with honors and a Bachelors of Science Degree in Marine Transportation and a commission as Ensign in the Unites States Navy. He then sailed on US Flag merchant vessels where he traveled the world. While attending Kings Point, Don met the love of his life, Frances Lucia. Fran and Don married in New Jersey on June 9, 1951. In 1953, Don joined Boise-Griffin Steamship Company, the largest steamship agency in New York, where he served as Vice President of Operations. He was recruited to head Luckenbach Steamship Company in Miami when they acquired Shaw Brothers Shipping Company in 1969. The company was later sold to Lavino Shipping Company where Don remained as General Manager until 1977. Don then returned to New York as President and CEO of Boise-Griffin Steamship Company. He later came back to Miami when he started his own firm. His companies included Oceanic Steamship Company, Oceanic Stevedoring Company, Anchor Repair Company, and Concorde Line. In 1992, Don was one of the founders of the Port of Miami Terminal Operating Company (POMTOC). Originally POMTOC was Don's vision and idea which was converted to reality and was extremely successful. Within the shipping industry, Don will be forever remembered for his unfailing integrity, work ethic, devotion and a keen sense of humor. Among his recognitions, Don was honored by his Alma Mater, Kings Point, with an Outstanding Professional Achievement Award in 2000. Don retired in Ft. Lauderdale in 2004. Don was preceded in death by his beloved granddaughter, Quinn van Bergen. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Fran, his three children, Deborah, Fran and Daniel Quinn; and nine grandchildren.
