DeTardo, Nicholas James 82 of Hollywood passed away on December 8, 2012. He is survived by his wife of 59 years LaVerne, his three sons, Douglas (Lisa) of Cooper City, Greg of Winter Park, FL and Mark (Margaret) of Fleming Island, FL, his eight grandchildren, Nicole Bisbano (Charles), Michael, Steven, Laura, Katherine, Owen, Alie Grace and Max, and sister, Lillian Tracy of Stuart, FL. He was preceded in death by his mother Josephine and father Michael. Mr. DeTardo was born in Cleveland Ohio and moved to South Florida in 1943. He graduated from Miami Edison High School in 1948. He attended Ohio University and received his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Miami. He graduated from the University of Miami School of Law in 1954. He was admitted to the Florida Bar and also the US District Court for the Southern Division of Florida that year. He was a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Fraternity, the Pi Kappa Alpha Social Fraternity and the Phi Alpha Delta Legal Fraternity. He was a member of the U.S. Air Force ROTC and enlisted as a Judge Advocate Officer in the U.S. Air Force in 1954 where he was admitted to and prosecuted cases before the United States Court of Military Appeals. After his military service, Mr. DeTardo returned to Hollywood and began private legal practice. He served as President of the Broward County Bar Association, was a member of Attorney's Title Insurance Fund since 1959. He was qualified as an Arbitrator in 1967 by the American Arbitration Association. He served first as Prosecutor and then as Judge for the Municipal Court of Hollywood from 1964 to 1977. He also served as a Judge for the City of Cooper City. He was appointed by the Governor to the Seventeenth Judicial Circuit Nominating Commission and served on the Florida Bar Grievance Committee. He received distinguished acknowledgment for 50 years of service by the Florida Bar. Mr. DeTardo was active in his community. He served as President of the Italian American Civic League, he was a member of the Kiwanis Club and he was a Fourth Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus. He was a Charter Member of the West Hollywood and the Miramar/Pembroke Pines Chambers of Commerce. He served on the Board of Directors for Southeast Bank of Hollywood. He served as Chairman of the Broward County Industrial Commission and was a member of the Broward County Planning and Zoning Board. He was a candidate for Mayor and for the Florida House of Representatives. Mr. DeTardo and his wife traveled extensively and enjoyed finding unique local dining experiences in faraway places long before there was an APP for that. A memorial mass will be held at 12 noon, Saturday, December 15 at Nativity Catholic Church in Hollywood, followed by internment at Lauderdale Memorial Park.
