Ekberg Ekberg, John Paul, Jr., of Delray Beach, FL, died Tuesday, April 22, at home surrounded by his loving family, after a courageously endured lengthy illness. He was 86. Paul Ekberg was born in St. Leonard's, New Brunswick, Canada in 1917, the son of the late John Paul Ekberg, Sr. of Ystad, Sweden, co-founder of Chesapeake Corporation of Virginia, and the former Miriam Evangeline Planche, of Cookshire, Quebec. He attended Episcopal High School, Alexandria, VA; graduated from Yale University, New Haven, CT, with a BS in 1939, and a BE in Chemical Engineering in 1940. He married the former Peggy Lansing of St. Louis in 1942 and pursued a career in production, sales, and marketing with Monsanto Chemical Company, Olin Matheson. Chemical Company, and Tenneco. He served as President of the Drug, Chemical and Allied Trades Association from 1972-73. Living a number of years in St. Louis, MO, and Greenwich, CT, Mr. Ekberg retired to Gulf Stream FL in 1980. Formerly a member of Indian Harbor Yacht Club of Greenwich CT, Mr. Ekberg was an avid yachtsman. He skippered a Whitby 42 with his wife for over twenty years, sailing from Florida to Honduras, Helsinki to Stockholm and annual cruises from Florida to Maine. He was formerly a Rear Commodore of the Cruising Club of America, Florida Station and, a member of the Manalapan Yacht Club of Florida and of Gulf Stream Bath and Tennis Club, Gulf Stream, FL. Mr. Ekberg was also a low handicap golfer at Bellerive Country Club, St. Louis, MO and Apawamis Golf Club, Rye, NY. He served on the Vestries of All Saints Episcopal Church, Pasadena California, Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, Creve Coeur, MO, and Saint Barnabas' Episcopal Church of Greenwich CT. He served as Senior Warden at Good Shepherd for many years. He is survived by his wife, Peggy; four children, Marla Barbin of Maui, HI, Dr. Susan Stiritz of St. Louis, MO, John P. Ekberg, III of Greenwich, CT, and Jill Ryan of South Freeport, ME; eight grandchildren, Dr. Rebecca Stiritz Moore of Greenwich, CT, Nathanial Paul Ekberg of Tucson, AZ, Gabriel James Sankey of San Juan Capistrano, CA, Nicholas Paul Stiritz, of Atlanta, GA, Jordan Nakoa Barbin of Maui, HI, Katherine Crandall Ryan of South Freeport, ME, William Bradley Stiritz of Chicago, IL, and Charlotte Stiritz Nagy of Evanston, IL; four great-grandchildren, Clara and Felix Auvray-Stiritz of Chicago, IL and Greta and Willa Nagy of Evanston, IL, and sister, Elsa Brown of Greenwich, CT and Delray Beach, FL. Memorial Services will be 12 noon, Friday, April 25, 2003, at the Episcopal Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea, 141 South County Road, Palm Peach, FL 33480, with the Reverend Ralph R. Warren, Jr., Rector, officiating.
