Lenore (Timmons) Tunnell(1939 - 2016)

Lenore Timmons Tunnell, born on May 6, 1939 in Dagsboro, died on July 8 in Dallas, Tex. She was 77.

Mrs. Tunnell was the daughter of the late W. Edgar and Ethel Burton Timmons and the widow of the late John Payson Tunnell, Sr. She attended public school in Millsboro through the tenth grade. In eleventh grade, she enrolled at Linden Hall, a college preparatory boarding school in Lititz, Pa., where she graduated in 1957. She then attended Oberlin College for two years before graduating from the University of Delaware with a B.A. in English in 1961.

Mrs. Tunnell married John Payson Tunnell, Sr. of Georgetown on Aug. 20, 1960. The couple began their life together in Wilmington and later moved to Beaconsfield, England; Mountain Lakes, N.J.; Oxford, Md.; and Severna Park, Md. Mrs. Tunnell moved to San Antonio, Tex., in 2005, and then to Dallas in 2009.

Mrs. Tunnell devoted her life to her family; raising her four children was her calling. She was a compassionate listener who was keenly interested in understanding people from all walks of life. She loved traveling and cherished opportunities to vacation with the family on sailing cruises, road trips across the United States and tours throughout Europe. An avid reader of news, fiction and poetry, she loved learning, questioning assumptions and debating the political issues of the day. She had a dry wit and greatly valued keeping a sense of humor.

Mrs. Tunnell is survived by her older sister, Rita Timmons Zacharias, of Willow Street, Pa., and her children Lisa Tunnell Drottar of Midland, Mich.; Beth Tunnell Howard of Houston, Tex.; John Payson Tunnell Jr. (Carolyn) of Millersville, Md.; Lynn Tunnell Dickinson (Derek) of Dallas, Tex.; and her grandchildren Dustin Vickers Howard, Hannah Scarborough Howard, Amanda Tunnell Drottar, Kurt Rogers Drottar Jr., Adam John Payson Tunnell, Patrick Walther Dickinson, and Christopher Burton Dickinson.
