Sarah D. Messick

Sarah D. Messick, formerly of Georgetown, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Dec. 17, 2016 at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford. She was 81.

Sarah was born in Darby, Pa., daughter of the late Elliott S. and Bertha M. (Bennett) Dallas.

She was a homemaker, an avid reader, a Girl Scout leader and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren. Sarah was a proud graduate of the College of William and Mary and actively supported their alumni association and the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. Sarah helped start the first daycare center in Georgetown and was a founding member of Crisis House. She was also a member of Sussex Pines Country Club.

Sarah was a longtime active member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Georgetown, where she was involved with numerous ministries, including Lay Reader, Alter Guild and co-chair of the antique show. Sarah had served as president of both the local Episcopal Diocesan Women and National Triennial Episcopal Women's Convention.

In addition to her parents, Sarah is preceded in death by her husband, John E. "Jack" Messick, in 1994; and a brother, Richard Dallas, in 2001.

She is survived by three children, Gayle Gilmore and husband Lee, of Alexandria, Va., Karen Street and husband Ward, of Crofton, Md., and John E. Messick, Jr., and wife Jodi, of Lincoln; and six grandchildren, Natalie Street Beiro, Michelle Gilmore, Meredith Gilmore, Hannah Street, Ella Messick and Corey Messick.

Funeral services were held Dec. 20, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Georgetown, with in the adjoining cemetery.
