Harry Carey Obituary

August 23, 2012

Harry Edward Carey Jr., 90, of Manlius, and formerly of the Valley, died Thursday at the VA Medical Center. The son of the late Harry and Anna (Bubb) Carey, he was born in Williamsport, PA. He was a graduate of Ithaca High School and attended the University of Missouri, where he played football. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, Harry left college to join the Marine Corps, serving in World War II and Korea. He, notably, was part of the security detachment on the Battleship Iowa that escorted President Roosevelt to meet with Stalin and Churchill at the Yalta Conference. After WWII, Harry completed his bachelor's degree at Oberlin College, returning again to the gridiron. He received his master's degree at Columbia University, then taught and coached briefly at Tabor Academy. He then switched to business, presiding over Syracuse Ladder and Scaffolding Inc. for 30 years until retiring in 1985 as vice president/general manager.

Harry was an avid golfer and volunteered generously with youth sports and the VA Hospital. He was a member of the Cavalry Club and American Legion Manlius Post 141.

Harry is survived by his two sons, Steven (Joanne) Carey and James (Harriet) Carey, and five grandchildren, Alyssa, Kristen, Lauren, Milo and Sidra. He was predeceased by his wife, Sydney Tuscano Carey, in 1997.

Per his wishes, there will be no calling hours or services. A private burial will be held at Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

Contributions in Harry's memory may be made to Clear Path For Veterans, 1223 Salt Springs Road, Chittenango, NY 13037 or to a charity of one's choice.
