Walter Powell Obituary

Walter James "Jim" Powell, 92, of Oneonta passed away peacefully Friday, October 24, 2014 at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta surrounded by his family. He proudly served his country in the United States Army Air Force during WWII. He was the crew chief of a B-24. He served in the Pacific Theater and flew a reconnaissance mission over Japan. Following his honorable discharge, he began working at NY Tel as a switchman. In 1984, Jim retired after 40 years of service.

Jim is survived by his two children, Carol Powell of Castle Pines, CO and David and Amy Powell of Peru; three grandchildren, Jason Powell, Carah Powell and Mary Perry; as well as several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Stephen Powell; sister, Wanda St. John; and three brothers, Harry, Francis and Donald Powell.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, October 28, 2014 in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main Street, Oneonta, New York from 11 a.m. to noon. Funeral services will immediately follow at noon with the Reverend Edwin Eastman officiating. Burial will be in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.
