Bert Wilson Hudson
Bert Wilson Hudson, 93, died on Sunday, March 24, 2013 after a brief illness.
Bert Hudson was born on October 16, 1919 in Jay, FL, the 10th child of John and Mamie Hudson. As a boy he worked on the family farm with his older brothers. His duties included picking cotton and herding cattle.
In 1939 he enrolled at the University of Florida
. His major was agriculture. Before he could graduate, World War II began so he volunteered for military service in the Army. He was sent to Texas for flight training. Before he could complete flight school he was transferred to St. Louis and spent the rest of the war in the command staff headquarters.
After discharge in December, 1945, he returned to the University of Florida and completed his undergraduate degree. He also received a Masters degree in animal husbandry. After college he moved to Crawfordville and had a part time job teaching agriculture to military veterans. Later he was employed by the Florida Department of Agriculture as a dairy inspector from 1953 to 1985. In addition to his state job he often assisted local farmers with problems they encountered with cattle diseases and injuries. He was considered very knowledgeable in the area of raising and managing livestock herds, particularly cattle and in the early 60's authored a text book on cattle diseases.
In 1950 he married Miriam Rehwinkel of Crawfordville. Together they had two sons, Mark and Michael Hudson.
After his retirement in 1985 he retired to part time farming in Crawfordville, growing blueberries and pears. He remained active into his early 90's.
Visitation will be Wednesday, March 27, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Bevis Funeral Home, Harvey-Young Chapel, 3106 Crawfordville Highway, Crawfordville, FL.
A Celebration of Life will be Thursday, March 28, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Bevis Funeral Home, Harvey-Young Chapel, Crawfordville, FL. Internment will take place at Crawfordville Cemetery. Bevis Funeral Home, Harvey-Young Chapel, Crawfordville, FL is in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by his son, Mark Hudson (Cindy) of Crawfordville, a daughter-in-law, Jeanne Hudson of Land O' Lakes, FL and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by all of his brothers and sisters, his wife, Miriam and son, Michael Hudson.
