George Dismukes May

George Dismukes May passed away quietly on June 18, 2012 at the age of 83. George was the youngest child of Frank Pierce May and Abbie Budd Munroe May. He was born on N. Jackson Street at the family home and spent his youth in Quincy with friends and numerous relatives. For high school, George attended Sewanee Military Academy in Sewanee Tennessee were he graduated with honors. He then entered the George Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia but his education was interrupted by a commitment to the Military. George served in the United States Air Force as a fighter jet navigator and was honorably discharge and returned to Atlanta and Georgia Tech to finish his undergraduate and Master's degrees in Civil Engineering. He graduated with honors in both degrees.

After graduating from the Master's program he stayed on at Georgia Tech as a professor in Structural and Civil Engineering. He also taught classes in computer sciences and help to develop early programs for engineering called COGO in the 1960's. George continued teaching at Georgia Tech until the early 1970's when he left to start his consulting business in structural and civil engineering. He had numerous clients throughout the state of Georgia and continued in his business until his passing in Atlanta, Georgia.

George May was a lover of history and of early literature and often would tell history in the form of stories to the delight of his children and others. He is missed by his family and friends. George is survived by his children; Frank Paul May of Lithonia, GA; Mary Elizabeth May (Darrell) of Dallas, TX; William Larach May (Susan) of Roswell, GA; his grandchildren Brian May (Megan) of New York City, NY, William Larach May, Jr. of Atlanta, Georgia, Brittany Taylor May of Charleston, SC, Charles Blake May of Nashville, TN and his sister, Betty M. Embry of Panama City Beach, FL.

A memorial service for friends and family will be held Saturday, May 4, 2013, at 11:00 AM at Eastern Cemetery in Quincy, FL.
