Harold L. Clack(1926 - 2013)

Harold L. "Papa" Clack

Harold Lee Clack of Tallahassee passed away on Wednesday, July 10, 2013 at the age of 86. Funeral services will be held at noon on Monday, July 15, at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church with burial at Southside Cemetery. The family will receive friends and well-wishers from 5 pm to 6 pm on Sunday, July 14, at Strong & Jones Chapel.

The second of five children born to Alice and Gideon Clack, he was born in St. Petersburg, Florida and moved with his family to Tallahassee at an early age. He graduated from the old Lincoln High School, served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and returned home to attend Florida A&M College where he lettered in both baseball and football, ultimately leading to his induction into the FAMU Sports Hall of Fame. For nearly forty years until his retirement, he owned and managed Artistic Barbershop in the Frenchtown neighborhood, where he was known to all as "Papa" Clack. Baptized in the Christian faith, he was a life-long member of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and a member and chairman of the trustees board. He gave back to his community through his church, Frontiers International, the Frenchtown Area Development Authority, and his ardent support of numerous FAMU programs and initiatives.

Cherishing his memory are two sons, Harold Levi (Theresa) of Bowie, MD and Herek Lerron of Ann Arbor, MI; two granddaughters, Eleadah Ryzon of Brooklyn, NY and Katrel Alease of Towson, MD; three sisters, Clara Herndon (Johnny) of Tallahassee, Geneva Ferguson (Lionel) of Miami, and Eva Smith (Otto, deceased) of Ft. Washington, MD; two sisters-in-law, Edith Ward and Ethel Cozart, both of Tallahassee; a brother-in-law Fred Hargrett (Rose) of Tampa; and a host of grieving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Dr. Doris Hargrett Clack; his parents Gideon and Alice; a brother Charlie; and a granddaughter Tamar Lael Clack.
