Lyle Burley(1934 - 2013)

Lyle R. Burley, Jr., born in Utica, New York, age 78, passed away April 15, 2013 in Tallahassee, Florida.

The son of Lyle R. Burley, Sr. and Mildred Burley he was predeceased by four sisters, Marilyn Pentagulia, Barbara Lockwood, Beverly Burley and Shirley Hunt. He is survived by his wife of 56 years Virginia Carolyn (Lee) Burley of Tallahassee, and brother, Douglas Burley and his wife Sandra, of Houston, Texas.

Lyle graduated from Utica Academy and worked with AT&T for several years before joining the US Marine Corp. and then the US Navy where he trained to become a pilot. He met his wife in Mobile, AL and they were married in 1956. After the Navy, Lyle and his family moved to Tallahassee where he worked for 35 years with Central Telephone Company and retired in 1993 as Safety & Training Manager. He also served on the Board of Directors of the North Florida Safety Council for 24 years and was a member of the Independent Telephone Association for many years. Lyle also became a Master Gardener and loved to work in his yard.

Lyle and Virginia are active members at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, where Lyle was a member of the Burleigh Law Class and sang in the Chancel Choir for 25 years. After retirement, he and Virginia traveled to many countries and loved to visit their children and grandchildren.

He is survived by four children, David Burley and his wife Virginia of Orlando, Sandra O'Leary and her husband Patrick of Tallahassee, John Burley and his wife Kimberly of Nashville, TN and Daniel Burley and his wife Debra of Rainbow City, AL. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Shaun O'Leary (Tampa), Ryan and Erin O'Leary (Tallahassee), Dustin Burley (Orlando), Lee and Christopher Burley (Rainbow City, AL) and Kaitlyn Burley (Nashville, TN).

The funeral service is scheduled for Thursday, April 18 at 11 o'clock in the morning at St. Paul's United Methodist Church (1700 North Meridian Road, Tallahassee). The family is requesting that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Big Bend Hospice (1723 Mahan Center Blvd. Tallahassee, FL 32308) and St. Paul's United Methodist Church. Bevis Funeral Home (850-385-2193, www.bevisfh.com) is assisting the family with their arrangements.
