Rubie Clemins

Rubie Earline Clemins, 93, formerly of Bluford and Urbana, IL passed away on Saturday, April 12th at her home in Tallahassee, FL. She was born on October 7, 1920, the youngest of four children of Howard and Rubie Pepple. Earline is survived by her two children, Archie (Marilyn) Clemins of Boise, ID and Sherry (Robert) Taylor of Winter Garden, FL; four grandchildren, Becky (Dan) Lewis and Travis (Urszula) Clemins of San Diego, CA, Scott (Rachel) Taylor of Boise, ID and Cindy (Jonathan) Hilgeman of Bozeman, MT; and four great-grandchildren, Nathan Lewis, Olivia Lewis, Ian Taylor and Kaelyn Taylor.

A child of the depression, Earline graduated from Bluford (IL) High School in its first four-year high school class. In 1940 she married Archie Cornell Clemins, who preceded her in death in 1994. In their fifty-four years together, they were separated only during WWII, during which time Earline taught school, often riding an obstinate horse to the country schoolhouse. She called those years 'the most difficult period' of her life.

The family moved to Urbana, Illinois in 1956. With intense determination and a strong belief in the value of education, Earline started college at the age of 40, receiving a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In the ensuing years she taught Business Education at Urbana High School, and after retirement worked as a tax preparer for the IRS.

In 1991 Archie and Earline moved to Westminster Oaks, a retirement community in Tallahassee, Florida. Throughout her life Earline was always ready for an adventure. Well into her eighties, she enthusiastically rafted the Boise River and sailed over the Tallahassee skies in a powered parachute. Always active in her church and community, Earline volunteered as a teacher's aide at W.T. Moore Elementary School, continued her quilt making tradition, and gave unselfish and compassionate service to others. She will be remembered for her bright intellect, relentless desire to learn, and a strong and independent spirit.

Memorial Service will be held on Friday, May 2nd at 1:00 PM in the Maguire Center at Westminster Oaks in Tallahassee. Graveside Service will be on Saturday, May 17th at 1:00 PM in Memorial Gardens, Woodlawn, Illinois (arrangements by Hughey Funeral Home, Mount Vernon, Illinois).
