William Canning

William Reed Canning

William Reed Canning,"Reed" died peacefully at Hospice House in Tallahassee on Friday March 7 amongst family and friends as he had wished. He was born September 10, 1943 in Wayne Nebraska. At that time in WWII, his father was flying Fighter Planes in Europe so Reed was two before meeting his dad. Reed loved being part of an Air Force family. Much of his elementary and high school years were spent in Europe where his father was stationed. He graduated from Kaiserslaughtern High School in Germany. The family was very proud of his admission to and graduation from the U.S. Military Academy, West Point. He successfully completed the challenging Army Ranger School and served in Vietnam. After his military career, he worked for the State of Texas. He retired in 2002 and moved to St. George, Utah where he pursued his passion of photography. He was happiest when he was exploring and photographing the state and national parks throughout the Southwest. He especially loved catching on film the perfect moment of a sunset. Reed's other passions were touring the U.S. by car and staying in touch with family along the way. He usually knew more family gossip than his parents did. He is preceded in death by his father Bev Canning. He is survived by his mother Millie Canning, a long-time resident of Pensacola Beach and recently of Tallahassee, his brother Mark and Mark's wife Sue of Tallahassee and his nephew Matt of Atlanta. Reed's wit and gentle spirit will be greatly missed. A memorial service will be held at St. Stephen Lutheran Church, 2198 North Meridian Rd., Tallahassee, FL, 32303 on Monday March 17 at 4:00 pm. A reception in the fellowship hall will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd., Tallahassee, FL, 32308.
