Aldonia Flowers Obituary

Aldonia Hadley Flowers

Mrs. Aldonia Hadley Flowers, 90 years old, passed away on Thursday, May 19, 2011. She was born in Cairo, Georgia to Herbert Garret and Beatrice Butler Hadley in 1920. She grew up in Palmetto, Florida and graduated from Lincoln High School there. Her Mother died when she was four years old and an older brother, Willie James, and a younger sister, Ethel Mae, died in the typhoid fever epidemic before she was six.

She was preceded in death by her late husband, William Doby Flowers, Sr. and her fifth child, William Doby Flowers, Jr. They raised and educated six children in Tallahassee, Fl. Her surviving children are: Altha Flowers Manning, Alwillie Hampton Speights (Charles), Fred Herbert Flowers (Loretta), Doby Lee Flowers, and Ralph Flowers (Barbara). She has 12 grandchildren and 14 great grand children. Her children, grands and greatgrands were the joy of her life. She had many cousins, nieces and nephews to whom she was very close and an abundance of friends both young and old, several of which she called her children. She and her first cousin Gladys Crawford of Miami are among the few Hadleys left in their generation. She called a dear childhood friend, Naomi Bivens of Bradenton, Florida, her sister. They remained close until her death.

Mrs. Flowers was a community and civil rights activist and worked tirelessly with the Rev. C.K. Steele and her dear friend Christine Knowles to integrate the schools of Leon County. She taught in the Leon County Schools for many years at the original Lincoln High School and later at Lively Vocational Technical School. This transition too was a civil rights issue as she had to force the issue of assignment to a school following the closing of the original Lincoln High School.

She also was one of the leaders that following the closing of the original Lincoln High School insisted that the next high school built be named Lincoln High School. She was a member of the Capital City Garden Clubs, The Miccosukee Sword Swallowers Bible Study Group, the NAACP, and several other organizations. She took great pride in her church, Bethel Baptist Missionary Church and her ministers, Rev. C.K. Steele, Rev. Alexander and the current minister, Rev. R. B. Holmes whom she loved and considered as one of her sons. The family requests that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to the "Mrs. Aldonia Hadley Flowers Endowed Scholarship Fund" at Florida A & M University. Checks should be made to: The FAMU Foundation for the above scholarship fund. For additional information please contact Mrs. Audrey Simmons Smith, Post Office Box 6562, Tallahassee, Florida 32314-6562 or by phone at (850) 599-3095. Memorial Services will be held Tuesday, May 31, 2011 at Bethel Baptist Missionary Church at 1:00 PM. Viewing of the body will be two hours before the service at the church or at Strong and Jones Funeral Home prior to the funeral date.

Mrs. Flowers has been an inspiration to me since the day I met her in tailoring class in the early 60's at old Lincoln. I admired her courage and strength for standing up for what she believed in. She truly was a giant in the Tallahassee community. I will cherish her memories forever.

Mrs. Aldonia Hadley Flowers is a treasure of her family and friends hearts and to lose her is like losing a piece of yourself.
But the love that she brought everyone...did not leave, for the essence of her soul lingers.

Cling to the memories and let them find their way to heal you.
The love and laughter, the joy in the togetherness you shared...will make you strong.
You'll come to realize that your time together, was a gift from God and that you are blessed to have such a precious gift of love in your life.

Keep your heart beating with the loving memories and trust in Jesus to guide you through. Know that though life moves on...the beauty of her love stays behind to surround and embrace all of you. Your mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin, sister, friend has left you with precious memories...to hold in your heart forever.

"I will not forget you. I have carved you on the palm of my hand." — Isaiah 49:15

Dear Family,

We offer our condolences at this time but rejoice in knowing that our beloved Sister in Christ is face to face in eternity with the LORD JESUS CHRIST. For to be absent from the body is to be present with the LORD.

I was blessed with the influence of Mrs. Flowers as a wonderful home room teacher at Lincoln High School. In more recent times, she was a great neighbor and friend in the Miccosukee community of Leon County.

Through generations Mrs. Flowers impacted many of our lives with genuine Christian love, boldness, honesty and straight forwardness.

Fond memories will remain with us forever.

Prayerfully Submitted with Love and Heartfelt Sympathy,

To the Flowers Family
I said a Prayer of Sympathy to the good Lord up above,
To ask Him to console you all and comfort you with love.
I prayed for help to understand the wisdom of His ways,
To trust that life is measured by love and not by days.
I asked the Lord to give you the wisdom and the grace
To know your loved one rests In the peace of God's embrace.
Until that joyous promised day when all of you will be
Enfolded in each other's arms throughout eternity.
Blessings upon each and evey one of you is our sincere and heartfelt prayer

To the Family of the Legendary Aldonia H. Flowers I wish to extend my deepest sympathies to each and everyone of you.
Mrs. Flowers was a woman of distinction for many different reasons but the one I am most affected by was her character. Mrs. Flowers said what she meant and meant what she said and was woman enough to admit when she was wrong. She touched me! I needed her in my life and didn't know it. Her living was not in vain. She could draw a crowd wherever she went. Mrs. Flowers and I spent time together during her illness and it was then we formed a special bond one of teacher and student she taught me things I thought I knew. She taught me how to handle "Toxic People".
Mrs. Flowers counseled me on womanhood survival and just how to do the right thing. She often would go into to great detail regarding her childhood and young adult life and her years as an educator.
Mrs. Flowers was a beautiful person and was born to be a mother. Mrs. Flowers was very talented and resourceful.
Mrs. Flowers knew everyone and never met a stranger.
She was very knowledgeable and I was fascinated by her extreme knowledge of political issues. We would watch CNN for hours and then spend hours talking about what we watched. I am confident of two things.
Mrs. Flowers was a blessing in my life.
Mrs. Flowers was a true soldier in the army of the Lord!!! I will miss her dearly but I will never forget her. I will look for her smile in her children and grandchildren and great grand children.
I will always appreciate having been in the company of the Legendary Aldonia H. Flowers.

With Much Love and Respect,

Sabrita D. Thurman-Newby
