Bessie Mae McClendon 85, a retired Professor of Home Economics died August 16, 2013 in Tallahassee, Fl. Funeral Service will be Thursday August 22, 2013 at 11:00am at Bethel AME Church with burial at Southside Cemetery.Zata Phi Beta Sorority Inc. will have Omega Service Wednesday August 21 at 5:15pm at Strong & Jones Chapel. Family will receive friends Wednesday at 6pm to 7pm at Strong & Jones Chapel. She graduated in 1946 from the Old Lincoln High School. Furthering her education, she attended Florida A&M University, where she recieved her Bachelors and Master's Degrees and recieved her Doctor of Philosophy Degree in 1977 from Florida State University.Bessie began her teaching career in Donalsonville, Georgia teaching Home Economics. A member of Bethel AME Church and served as a member of the Stewardess Board #1, Usher Board #2, Daughter of Sarah Allen, The Courtesy Guild and member of Sunday School Bible Class #2. Also, a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. Survivors include her daughter Joyce M. Hewlett of Wellington, FL., three grandchildren, Douglas Hewlett Jr., Jalayna Hewlett and Jordonn Hewlett all from Wellington, FL a sister Ophelia Speed of Centerville, VA a brother-in-law Roy McClendon of Colorado Springs, CO; sister-in-law Judy Reynolds of Macon, GA, nephew Gary Speed; special son Douglas Hewlett Sr; caregiver Carolyn C. Butler, two goddaughters Joyce Jackson and Barbara Kelly; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors and friends.
