Lillian Hagins Obituary

Lillian W. Hagins

Lillian Whittington Hagins, 82, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 21, 2011 in Tallahassee, Florida. Funeral services will be 11 AM EDT, Tues., May 31 at Bethel A.M.E. Church. Interment will follow at Culley's Meadowwood Memorial Park. Ivy Beyond the Wall service will be 6:30 PM Mon., May 30 at St. James C.M.E. Church. Wake service will follow at 7 PM.

Sister Hagins graduated from Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach, FL receiving a Bachelor's Degree and continued her education at Florida A&M University where she received a Master's Degree in History.

In the early 1960's Sister Hagins moved to Tallahassee to begin work at Florida A&M, where for the next four decades she would give dedicated service to both the University's Dept. of Athletics and the Dept. of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. While working at Florida A&M University she served as the Administrative Assistant to the Director of Athletics and Chairman of HPER when the two roles were combined under the late A.S. "Jake" Gaither and the late Hansel E. "Tootie" Tookes.

In the Fall of 1992, she was honored for her tireless efforts in the FAMU Athletic Department with enshrinement into the Florida A&M University Sports Hall of FAME, in the Spring of 2003 she retired from active service with the University, and in March, 2011 she was recognized with a Meritorius Service Award for 40 years of service. She is survived by one daughter Dianna McCloud, a son Harvey, a sister Alma Pringle (Lewis) of Oklahoma City, OK; a brother, Dr. Aaron Smith (Tampa, FL), a sister-in-law, Janis K. Alexander (Newport News, VA); five grandchildren, Shawn Ready (Orlando, FL), Tameka Ready (Tallahassee, FL), Nakia Love (Tallahassee, FL) Jeremy and Angela Hagins (Philadelphia, PA); seven great-grand children and a host of nieces, nephews, and sorrowing friends.

Harvey and Dianna, God's peace be with you both. I knew your mother as the clerk of the precinct where I worked for the Leon County Elections Department. I appreciated her humor, her leadership and how she treated people. She made an impression on me even in just working along side her during an election, and I'm richer in spirit for having been in her presence. May light perpetual shine upon her.
