Lorene McCook Obituary

Lorene Thomas McCook

QUINCY- Lorene Thomas McCook, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 15, 2011. She was a beautiful Christian woman who dedicated her life to the Lord and her family.

Born on August 30, 1921 in Black, AL., her family moved to Palmetto, FL. when she was 3 years old. She attended Palmetto High where she met her sweetheart, Oneal McCook and they were later married. The two of them were married 39 years until his death in 1977. They had three girls, Yvonne, Carolyn and Frances and moved to Quincy in 1948. The first thing they did was join the First Baptist Church where she has been a member ever since. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother and lived a long, happy life. She graciously practiced hospitality and enjoyed entertaining.

She was very gifted and had a great love for flowers and floral arranging and along with her daughters owned "The Ivy Shop" for many years.

Her beautiful smile, warmth and unique sense of humor were some of her most endearing qualities. Life is strange. Even when mother was frail and weak, she still managed to make us feel special and safe. Mothers do that don't they, their very presence can help even when we ended up mothering her in the final days, she was still taking care of us. We will forever miss her.

She leaves a legacy of three daughters, Yvonne Faircloth, Carolyn Lambert (Gene) and Frances McKenzie (Robby); twelve grandchildren, Lynn, Mark, Susan, Tim, Tammy, Kristie, Jeana, Clay, Kim, Wendy, Danny and Bonnie; twenty-seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Frances Thomas of Palmetto, Fl., Jewel Thomas of Bradenton, FL., and Joyce McCook of Anna Maria Island, FL.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Oneal McCook, her parents W.F. and Cora Lee Thomas, two brothers, Wilbur Thomas and Charles Thomas and one grandchild, Tony Martin.

The service will be held Wednesday, May 18, 2011, at the First Baptist Church Chapel, with a private burial later in the day. Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until service time, in the Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 70, Quincy, FL., 32351, or to Big Bend Hospice, 115 N. Jackson St., Quincy, FL., 32351.

Charles McClellan Funeral Home, 850.627.7677, Quincy, FL., in charge of arrangements.

Carolyn, Yvonne, Frances and Family, I am so sorry to hear of your mother's passing. I have great childhood memories of her and your family at catfish fry's, fishing at the lake and helping at The Ivy Shop. She was my grandmother Virginia's best friend and I know she is glad to have her in Heaven! Thinking of you during this difficult time.

Carolyn, Yvonne and Frances, I am saddened to hear of the passing of Aunt 'Rene. My condolences to each of you and our prayers are with you always. I remember with joy all the times during my growing up years when we, my dad, mom and brothers went to Quincy to visit Uncle Neal and Aunt Rene (and "the girls") :) It was always a great time. And even though time passes and we grow apart my thoughts, prayers and love will remain always with you. Again, my condolences to each of you.
God Bless you all, Linda and Heather McCook (Jacksonville, Florida)

Aunt Rene was the sweetest lady on earth. She lived her life with faith and grace. Now she is at home with Gaga, TatTat, Uncle Wilbur and my daddy. What a reunion that must have been! Looking forward to the day when we will all see them again. I have the fondest memories of visiting Quincy and some of the best memories of my life. We love you all and are praying for God's peace. Love, Becky and Bobby and family

Yvonne, Frances and Carolyn may Gods gown of grace, mercy and comfort surround each of you in this difficult time. As Aunt Rene held each of you close to her heart as only moms can do, continue to hold and lift up each other in the days ahead until you see her again. I am praying for you and love you.
