Mary Lucille "Lu" Slocum

Mary Lucille "Lu" Slocum, 81, of Tallahassee, died August 17, 2013, at Big Bend Hospice House. Lu was born June 7, 1932, in Deer River, MN, to Fay and Stella (Forsman) Chapman. Moving to Rocky River, OH in 1955, she and her first husband opened the Cavana Dance Studio and Cavana Ballroom. Lu taught ballroom dancing for 20 years, never losing her love for the art.
In 1984, Lu married Robert R. Slocum and moved to Weidman, MI, where they lived until relocating to Tallahassee in 2008 to be near family.
Lu loved to cook for her family, and she and Bob shared a love of travel, reading, music, and caring for the many cats, both domestic and feral, that passed through their lives. Lu's sense of humor and lighthearted view of life endeared her to everyone she met, helping her and her family as they faced the challenges of her illness.
Lu's loving husband, children, and grandchildren hold in their hearts the cherished memories of long summer days at the house on the lake enjoying family, food, and laughter.
Lu is survived by her husband Robert Slocum; daughters Kim (Mitch) Komisar of Tallahassee and Keel (Tony) Arlia of N. Royalton, OH; sons Kage (Tina) Cavanah of Birmingham, AL, and Kohl (Kimberly) Cavanah of Jackson, MO; brother Robert Chapman of Tulsa, OK; stepsons Chet Cavanah and Werner Slocum of Denver, CO; step-daughter Erika Slocum Schiffer of Jackson, MI; eleven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received Thursday, August 22, 2013, from 5-8 pm at the home of Kim Komisar at 7785 Maclean Road, Tallahassee. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Alzheimer's Project of Tallahassee or Big Bend Hospice.
