Miriam Adelaide (Langley) Abbott

Miriam Adelaide (Langley) Abbott of Tallahassee, FL, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 10, 2011 following a major stroke. She was born December 14, 1912, in Chicago, IL, the oldest of seven children. Miriam lived in several major U.S. cities and Canada while she was growing up. Miriam met and married G. Warren Abbott at Albion College in Albion, Michigan. She graduated in 1935 with a degree in Home Economics. She and Warren were married September 6, 1936, and celebrated 71 years together before his death in 2007. She and Warren raised five children in Midland, Michigan from 1936-1969, then moved to Ft. Wayne, IN, where they lived from 1969-2007. Miriam did a variety of volunteer work in Midland. She worked at the hospital and drove the elderly to appointments. She was a Cub Scout leader and often a room mother at school. In Fort Wayne, she was a member of IPFW Sew and Chat, and she and Warren were founding members of Beautiful Saviour Lutheran Church. Her kindness and caring for others was never- ending. Survivors include her children Kenneth Abbott of Clarkston, MI, Thomas Abbott of Colorado Springs, CO, John Abbott of Tallahassee, FL and Betty Jean Schweitzer of San Jose, CA; her sisters Ruth Shuter, Pat Read and Jean McNutt; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers, one sister and her oldest son, David Abbott. In Tallahassee, visitation will be held 2:00- 3:00p.m., Saturday, October 15th, at Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home, Riggins Road Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. In Fort Wayne, visitation will be held from 11:30a.m.-1:00p.m. on Saturday, October 22nd, at Hockemeyer & Miller Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 1:00p.m. with a short graveside service immediately following at Covington Memorial Gardens. Memorial donations may be made in Miriam's honor to Starr Commonwealth, 13725 Starr Commonwealth Road, Albion, MI 49224 or The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
