Alfred Hugh Adams, Alfred Hugh Adams, of Bokeelia, Florida since 1999, passed into life with Christ on August 23, 2010. He was born March 8, 1928, in Punta Gorda, Fla., to Alfred A and Irene Gatewood Adams.He attended Charlotte High School and earned his BS, Masters and Doctorate from Florida State University (FSU).
He was the Captain of the FSU football team in 1949, '50 and was their first Little All American tackle. He was also a varsity assistant football coach and the Assistant Dean of Men at FSU. From FSU he was appointed the Superintendent of Schools for Charlotte County, Florida. From there he became President of Broward Community College.
After 19 years at BCC, he retired but was asked to serve as Executive Director of the Broward Center for the Performing Arts and then President of the Broward Performing Arts Foundation. He was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame at FSU as well as Charlotte High School. He served our country in the US Navy in the Korean War and retired as Commander in the US Naval Reserves.
He was a dedicated and loving family man and was an active member and Sunday School teacher in his church. He is survived by his wife, Lynda Long of Bokeelia, FLa.; his children, Joy Adams Wamble (Russell) of Destin, FL, Alfred (Al) Hugh Adams Jr., Paul Morgan Adams, both of Tallahassee, FL, Laura Adams, Tallahassee and his stepson Jason Scott Foures (Kristen) of Naples, FL, and his beloved puppy dog, Moses.
He is also survived by his sister, Eloise McDougall of Punta Gorda, FL; her children, Grant McDougall, Tammy Wright and Melinda Grantham and Sandy McDougall (predeceased), and his first cousins, Neil Gatewood and Mildred Hommer; his grandchildren, Morgan Wamble King (Charley), Lindsey Wamble, Will Wamble, Linda Adams, Nick Adams, Joe Adams and great-granddaughter Mary Adams King.
Services will be at 11 a.m. EDT today, August 26, at First Baptist Church of Pine Island.
