John Scheper Vanderoef



John S. Vanderoef ("Jack"), Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Florida State University, died Saturday, March 23, 2013 at Westminster Oaks, Tallahassee, Florida, where he had resided since 2002. He was born in Middletown, NY, November 9, 1929, the only child of John Clarence and Bertha Scheper Vanderoef.
He was Baptized and raised in the Presbyterian Churh and grew up in Clearwater, Florida. He graduated from St. Petersburg Junior College, then attended Florida State University where he received his BA in 1950 and MA in 1951 in Political Science. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict and then attended Princeton University where he earned a Ph.D.
in Political Science. He returned to FSU in January 1959 where he taught Political Science until his retirement in 1997. His main area of expertise in teaching and publishing was British Government and American Political Thought. Dr. Vanderoef was a member of Phi Beta Kappa honor society, Pi Gamma Mu National Social Sciences Honor Society, and Pi Sigma Alpha National Political Science Honor Society.
He was a much-loved professor and advisor to the thousands of students who passed through his classes for decades. He is survived by a first cousin, Jean Kohl of Newburgh, NY. He also leaves behind his lifelong friend and colleague Dr. Richard B. Gray.
Dr. Vanderoef was a gregarious and loving person who "adopted" two families, one in Tallahassee and one in Hickory, North Carolina.
His Hickory family had its beginning 60 years ago in the U.S. Air Force, where Jack met Charles E. Trado, MD. The family includes Dr. Trado and his wife Joyce and their four children: Charlotte Davis (Scott), Melanie Trado, Chuck Trado (Caroline), and Tony Trado (Donna). His Tallahassee family included his colleague, Dr. Paul J. Piccard, his wife Betty and their five children: Bob Piccard, Jane Piccard (Hunt Greene), John Piccard (Geraldine), Mary Piccard Vance (James), and Ann Piccard (Charles Reischmann).
A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, April 1, 2013 at 2:00 PM in the Frances Chapel at Westminster Oaks, 4449 Meandering Way, Tallahassee Florida, Rev. Mary P. Vance presiding.
Memorial contributions may be made to Fellowship Presbyterian Church, 3158 Shamrock South, Tallahassee, FL 32309. A private graveside service was held on March 25, 2013 at Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park in Clearwater. The families and friends would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Westminster Oaks Health Center for their loving and compassionate care.
