Mary Kathleen Anderson Hawkins, age 98, died June 15, 2014 in Tallahassee, Florida.
She was born June 11, 1916 in Amelia, Va., daughter of Robert George Anderson and Blanche Louise Martin. Mrs. Hawkins graduated from Amelia High School and Richmond Business College. After marrying John Calvin Hawkins on February 16, 1940, they lived most of their married life in Richmond, Va. until his death in 1971.After working as a bookkeeper, she devoted herself to raising their family, later returning to work at the Thomas Allergy Clinic. After retiring she moved to Panama City, Fl. in 1982. Mrs. Hawkins then moved to Westminster Oaks Retirement Community, Tallahassee, in August 1990, where she happily resided until her death.Mrs. Hawkins was a life long Presbyterian and a member of Pine Grove, Forest Hill, Grace, and Lafayette Presbyterian Churches.
She was predeceased by her husband John Calvin Hawkins, her grandson Eric Wright and her four brothers, John, Kenneth, Malcolm, and Rodney Anderson. She is survived by her daughter Linda Hawkins Brannon and husband Hillman of Tallahassee; daughter Norma Hawkins Wright and husband William of Moorestown, NJ; "almost son" Stewart Anderson and wife Cheryl of Burkeville, Va.; grandchildren Drew Brannon and wife Jennifer of Monrovia, Ca.; Kate Wright Mills and husband Derek of Red Bank, NJ; and Emily Wright of Boston, Mass.Also surviving are "Virginia daughter" Nancy Anderson Shelton and "almost sister" Ercelle Morris, both of Richmond, Va.; sister-in-law Rose Anderson and brother-in-law Winfrey Hawkins and wife Shirley, all of Amelia, Va.; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at 1:30p.m.in the McGuire Center of Westminster Oaks. At a later date, a second service will be held in Amelia, Va. with interment at Pine Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to The Tallahassee Boys Choir, Big Bend Hospice, or the Benevolent Assistance Fund at Westminster Oaks Retirement Community.Kelly Barber of Bevis Funeral Home (850-385-2193, www.bevisfh.com) is assisting the family with their arrangements.
