Phoebe Katherine (Kay) Coburn

1912 - 2014 Obituary Condolences
Phoebe Katherine (Kay) Coburn

Phoebe Katherine (Kay) Coburn, aged 101, died on July 28, 2014 at Big Bend Hospice. In spite of her advanced age, she remained a vibrant and witty presence in her family's life until the end. She is survived by her daughters, Lee Farnsworth and Catherine Coburn, her granddaughters Karen Mann and Marilyn Penot, and her great-grandchildren, Kristen Mann, Edwin Blackburn and Sarah Blackburn.

Born in Blue Ridge, Georgia, she moved with her family to Miami when her father assisted in the construction of the railroad through the state of Florida. She was present in Miami during its early days, and was witness to much of its early history. During WWII she established herself in a career in photography. It was also in Miami that she met her husband, Orth, a police officer and ultimately police chief in Miami Springs. By the 1960s she had her own photographic business. A talented artist, she painted in oils and watercolors and favored Florida subjects. She was active in the community, participating in social and professional organizations and volunteering. On her retirement, she moved to Lake Wales, FL where she continued to paint and was active in her church and community. After her husband's death and in the face of declining health, she moved to Tallahassee to be near her daughter Lee and granddaughter Marilyn.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Sarah Cox, her son Robert, and her husband Orth.

The family will have a private memorial service held at a later date. Donations may be made in Katherine's honor to The Refuge House, 1517 S. Adams Street, Tallahassee, FL 32301.
