I just recently found out about Dr. CH's passing and am still in shock over the news.

While at FSU I had her for two classes and when I was finally able to visit the campus she was one of the professors that I specifically wanted to meet. I also was able to spend some time with her at a conference and later when she came to our library to do a workshop. I consider myself fortunate to have had her intersect my life and to provide me with her professional perspectives and knowledge. I know she is very much missed by all she touched.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Dr. CH's passing. This is a true loss to the profession and to all students of Library Science. My memories of her will be forever linked to the Librarians Serving the Public program and what an inspiration she was to all of us. My deepest condolences to her family.

I took Dr. CH's international and comparative information services class in the summer of 2006 and the class opened up my mind to the world beyond our borders. She made me realize both how big and small our world is. Thank you Dr. CH. Rest well.

I believe I was one of the first students to find out about Dr. CH's passing since she had been our Internship Coordinator this semester; however, the shock left me dumbfounded. I had no idea she had been ill for some time as she had always been so diligent and efficient online.

I never met Dr. CH in person, however, i also took her Collection Management course a few semesters ago and I was extremely impressed with the width and depth of her knowledge in the subject matter--brilliant!

Moreover, she empathized and cared greatly for her students while maintained extreme professionalism--a balance that is so precious these days! She indeed deserved the Dean's Award!

May everyone (family, friends, students) that has been impacted by her life continue her legacy and spirit of coupling excellence and professionalism with a touch of humaneness.

Sincerely,

Stephanie Galipeau

My heartfelt condolences are offered to the family of Dr. Maria Chavez-Hernandez. Dr. Chavez-Hernandez was a woman to be admired for so many things – her compassion, her resolve, her humor and grace, and, of course, her professionalism, discretion, and dedication. Dr. Chavez-Hernandez opened her door and her heart to others, remaining sensitive to others’ needs and hopes, even as she, herself, struggled with infirmity, unvoiced, yet with a sense of palpable inevitability. I knew Dr. Chavez-Hernandez as I discussed various options for internships following my MLS, and again when I returned the CI for a Specialist degree. She supervised my internship in a museum archives; an experience that has deepened my understanding of information as it informs culture, history, and art. It has been a week since learning of Dr. Chavez-Hernandez’s death. It has taken me a week to recover myself sufficiently to express my sorrow at such sad news. I am a better person for having known her; great persons live on in their work and all of those they have touched.

Dr. Chavez-Hernandez meant so much to me. She mentored me when I was a graduate student at FSU. Always warm and generous, as well as incredibly intelligent, I was inspired by her. I was so amazed by her serenity and humility - especially after having accomplished so much in her professional life. I only hope that I can be half the woman she was. I am terribly saddened by her passing way and will miss her deeply.

Maria was a great friend, teacher, and advocate. She was so dedicated to the students and alumni of the College of Information. I had the opportunity to work closely with her while I was a student and when I served as the President of the CI Alumni Association. I have many fond memories of those times. She helped so many and always shared her passion for people and libraries with everyone. I will miss her, and I extend my deepest sympathies to her family and friends at this difficult time.

My prayers go out to the Family of Dr. Maria Chavez-Hernandez. I had the privilege to be under her tutorage for several classes while working on my Masters at Florida State. As an older returning student, Dr. Chavez-Hernandez made the journey back to school a pleasure. She was passionate about her field and she instilled that passion into her students. She was generous with her praise and readily available to offer guidance if need be. Dr. Chavez-Hernandez showed me great kindness when my father passed away during a semester that I had her as an instructor. At that time her mother was also very ill. It was a kindness that I will never forget.

My thoughts and paryers are with Ms. Chavez-Hernandez. I remember when I was planning to do my internship as an intern at the capitol in Tallahassee, I was not certain if I should. As the internship coordinator at that time, she was the voice I needed to realize my love of information and government coming together. She will greatly be missed by the whole School of Inforamtion Studies family.

Maria and I were doctoral students together at FSU. We had a very small doctoral class. I often went to Maria's residence in Alumni Village to help her with her papers. We also studied together for our doctoral exams. I became good friends with Miguel, Carmen, Teresa and Priscilla (although Priscilla said she did not remember me). She was only five or six. We made it together through the labyrinth of the program and graduated. She was a great friend and we kept in touch over the years. She was a loving and generous person. I will miss her very much but I'm glad her suffering is over. Maybe she'll put in a good word for me up there as she always looked out for the other person. Love and remember her always, Teri

To the family and friends of Dr. Maria T. Chavez-Hernandez,

My deepest sympathies during your time of loss.

I came to know Dr. Maria when I was working on my PhD at FSU in the early 1990s, while Dr. Maria was about to finish hers. Later, when she joined the faculty at FSU, I had the pleasure of meeting her again a few times. We shared a common interest in international librarianship, and she was always very encouraging to me. Thank you, Maria !

Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

To Maria's family and friends..
My first memory of Maria, was a vibrant PhD student, a year behind me, (about 20 years ago), with poise, courage, and a natural ability to direct and lead discussions, and uphold and substantiate passionate views for minorities--whether customers or fellow professionals.
My last memory is interestingly the same. This passion and point of view was Maria's greatest contribution to the LIS field. Maria's students and colleagues will not forget Dr. CH, and hopefully will strive to continue to carry on her good work in this area.
She talked of her daughters and their accomplishments to me many times--and the love of her husband and large family--who sustained her not only in this recent and too quick illness, but in other difficult times. She enjoyed and chuckled over both mothers living with her and her husband--she delighted in it. She rolled her eyes smiling and said her husband was surrounded by women--daughters, wife, mothers! Miguel she loved you so---
I hope you will share with us in the future how all of you are doing--in a world now vibrant with memories of Maria.

i had the honor and pleasure of working directly with Maria these last few years in her many roles in the college - as she worked with alumni, with her internship and other students, with library professionals in Tallahassee, around the state, and beyond, and with our own faculty. Her deep commitment to the highest ethical standards of the profession and to enhancing opportunities for all were an inspiration to all she met. She will indeed be greatly missed, but she will continue to lead by her vision and passionate caring.
She fought a courageous battle, never losing hope or faith, and continuing to care about others even as she lost her health. May she rest in peace, and may her family and friends be comforted in the thought that this was not a life lost, but one that will live on in many many ways.

Maria was an outstanding person who dedicated her life to helping other and will be greatly missed. I wanted to share with the everyone the reason that Dr. Chavez-Hernandez was awarded the Deans' Award for Outstanding Contributions to the College of Information at Florida State University.

This year the College is launching a new award – The Deans’ Award for Outstanding Contributions to the College of Information. The person who receives this award is selected for their outstanding contributions to the College in the areas of program development and student support. The award winner can be a student, faculty member, alumni or friend, who through their dedication and commitment has expanded the opportunities available to FSU College of Information students. Nominees are recommended to the Deans by students, faculty, staff, alumni or friends and their selection is made by the Deans based upon their contribution and commitments to the welfare of the College and its students.

This year’s award – the first ever is being presented to a faculty member who has consistently been a voice for unrepresented minority groups within our student body and faculty. This individual has consistently and steadily reminded us that we need to be proactive in recruiting minority students and faculty.

This is an individual who in her own kind way has dedicated much of her career to expanding opportunities for students internationally. She has shared her extensive talents, encouraged all of us to do the same with international students and traveled extensively to provide education and training for librarians and prospective librarians outside the US. She has promoted and nurtured our international internship programs in London and Florence. Through these efforts she has help bring literacy to many people in many lands and has helped provide for a better understanding between CI students and the people of other lands.

In addition she is popular with students who 'crave' her expressed passions for library, information work and inclusion.

Above all else she has been a faithful and ardent CI supporter through her teaching and service, through her guidance of students, and through her engagement of alumni in College activities.
So it is with a great deal of joy and admiration that I am honored to award the Deans’ 2007 Award for Outstanding Contributions to the College of Information to Dr. Maria Chavez-Hernandez.

The award was given October 27, 2007 at the College of Information Convocation.

Posted for CI doctoral student Kalyani Annamraju.

I am writing to share with you how she has touched my life by her open, thoughtful and kind spirit. As the recruiter for our College at FSU openhouse in 2004, 2005 , Dr. Maria was certainly thoughtful, thorough and patient in providing all the information I avidly sought from her. I was initially drawn to CI because of her caring ways. It is my firm hope that I for one and we as a community have now in her a powerful intercessor to whom we can confide our concerns and cares.

Kindly send on the assurance of my prayers for her daughter and family.

Please join me in celebrating Dr. Chavez-Hernandez's new life at her eternal home for up there in that brighter world she is free from the ravages of disease and death. She now has the fullness of life and the fulfillment of her deepest human yearnings, beyond the bounds of body, time and space .

May Dr. Maria rest in everlasting peace and may we pass on the legacy of her kindness to one another as a community of caring people.

It was with great shock and sadness that I learned of Maria's passing. I was fortunate to have worked with her at FSU both while I was on the Tallahassee campus as well as while I was on the P.C. campus. Her kindness and gentle humor, both personal and professional, touched me greatly and will be missed.

I worked with Maria as a fellow-faculty member in the FSU College of Information for a number of years. In the fall of 2006 I attended a Librarians of Color conference that Maria attended. In all of my contacts with Maria as a faculty member and specifically at this conference I was impressed by her commitment to equity for all and her proactive stance in providing it. Her voice was an important one at faculty meetings and in hiring decisions. And the international librarianship perspective she brought to our students was unique and outstanding. Maria had many wonderful personal and professional talents and abilities that she shared with whomever her life touched. The memories and effects of those will live on forever through others and through her accomplishments. She will be sorely missed. Please accept my sincere sympathy -- for her family, close friends, and all of us who will no longer have the benefit of her physical presence.

I have just learned with deep sadness the passing away of Dr. Maria Chavez-Hernandez. Dr. Chavez-Hernandez was my colleague at FSU, and a close friend. I have long admired her efforts to bring multi-cultural and international approaches to library and information science, and her nurturing of students with interests in that area. I know that she will be missed by many not just at Florida State University, but also here at the University of South Florida, and by all those she has touched throughout the world of our profession, and in her personal and family life.

I will miss Maria's untiring efforts to expand the horizons of librarianship. Thank you, Maria, for recruiting Howard Rodriguez-Mori to the doctoral program at FSU. I regret only that your signature will not appear on the title page of his dissertation, but I know that your spirit will continue to guide both his research and mine. Thank you.
