Doris was born March 19, 1929, in Thomasville, GA, and was the daughter of Alton James Singletary and Lorena Singletary. She attended Thomasville High School. She met her husband, Billy, during World War II. She was employed for a number of years for Bell Telephone Company in Thomasville, GA. In the late '60s she and her husband moved to Orlando, FL. They eventually accepted positions as houseparents for a county run children's home.
Doris' compassion and love for all children made her the perfect mentor and role model for so many young lives. In her younger years, she enjoyed fishing, ceramics, crafts, and cooking, and she excelled at all of them (and her family and friends enjoyed the benefits of her wonderful cooking). In the last year or so of her life, she enjoyed time with her constant companion, Max (miniature dachshund) and her great grandson, Xabi Zarate.
Despite declining health from dementia, Xabi and Max seemed to have special places not only in her heart but also in her memory as well. Doris is survived by three sons, Terry Drew (and wife Jane) of Adairsville, GA, Fred Drew (and wife Frances) of Monticello, FL, and Rick Drew (and wife Maria) of Branson, MO; her friend, Cora Farley; sister-in-law, Peggy F. Singletary of Thomasville, GA; nine grandchildren, Lori Hopper, Roxie Zarate, Jennifer Drew-Hayes, Melissa Drew, Chris Drew, Jeff Drew, Jon Michael Drew, William Drew and Amanda Drew; 11 great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Doris was predeceased by her parents; her husband, William B. "Billy" Drew; her grandson, Jason Drew; her brothers, Robert "Bob" Singletary, Alton "Buddy" Singletary, and James "Bobo" Singletary; and her sisters-in-law, Martha "Peggy" Singletary and Doris K. Singletary. She was a beacon of light and love and she will be missed dearly by many.
