Herbert Glickman Obituary

Herbert (Hymie) S. Glickman

Herbert (Hymie) S. Glickman, 87, of Perry, Florida passed away Saturday, July 16th. He was a lifelong resident of Perry, Florida. He graduated from Taylor County High School and went on to the University of Florida. After a short stay in Gainesville, he joined the Navy and was stationed in Jacksonville, Florida. His father and uncle, Morris and Ben Glickman, traveled to NYC from Lithuania when they were young boys. After a few years in NYC, they found their way down to Savannah, GA where Morris met and married Dora Rice, and, soon after, Hymie was born. In 1924, when Hymie was 6 months old, the family moved to Taylor County, Florida. His father and uncle opened a department store, "The Fair Store", which is still, 86 years later, a thriving business. His father was one of the founding members of Temple Israel in Tallahassee, and Hymie and his children were members as well. Hymie married a beautiful woman, Louise Francis Ward, from Monticello, in 1953, and had two children. He was very involved in the community and numerous charitable organizations. He was one of the original founding members of the Perry Elk Lodge, and was a member of the America Legion. He was known for his story telling, humor, kindness, and generosity. He was loved and admired by all of Taylor County. Hymie was preceded in death by his parents Morris and Dora (Rice) Glickman; his uncle and step father Ben Glickman; a sister, Trudy; his wife, Marie (Ward) Glickman; and his son Marty Morris Glickman. He is survived by his daughter Marsha Doll Faulkenberry; son in law Dean Faulkenberry; three granddaughters Sara Faulkenberry, Gracie Faulkenberry, Tiffany Doll; grandson Dean Faulkenberry II; and sisters Rosalie and Joan from Jacksonville. A graveside service will be held at Oakland Cemetary near the Governors Mansion in Tallahassee today, July 18th, at 3pm. In lieu of flowers, a memorial gift may be made in Hymie's name to Temple Israel.

I am so sorry to hear of Hymie's passing. He was always kind and gracious to everyone. I have fond memories of shopping at The Fair Store. In fact, some of my earliest memories are in that store and my mother buying me shoes. Mr. Ben was always there to offer a smile and candy. My family and I had great respect for Mr. Ben and Hymie. We will miss Hymie and offer our sincerest sympathies at this time.

Marsha & family: Having lived in Taylor County most all of my life, I echo the memories that others have written about shopping at The Fair Store. From childhood on thru my adult life, shoes, shirts, and jeans were purchased for me, and later by me, for myself, husband & children. And, since The Fair Store & Bell Pharmacy were "next door neighbors" on the West side of the courthouse square, we were in & out of each other's store throughout the work day. Rebekah & William loved to go next door to visit Ms. Louise, Hymie, & "Uncle" Ben. Bob's endearment nickname for Hymie was "YumYum" ~ We will miss him and pray that your fond memories will provide peace and comfort.

The Fair Store and the Glickmans were part of my childhood in Perry and I hold fond memories and a deep gratitude in my heart for being blessed to be a part of that era. My grandfather opened the Suwannee Store in Perry and as a child I spent a lot of time downtown and loved going to "Glickman's" to shop. It was a magical place and I loved going to visit Mr Hymie and Mr Ben and get a new pair of shoes!

To Marsha and her family, take comfort in knowing that all of Taylor County and her many children spread across the world mourn with you on the passing of this most wonderful man.

RIP Mr Hymie.

I am so sad to learn of Mr. Glickman's passing. He was such a kind and patient man, and was always the epitome of gracious, southern customer service. Perry was a better place because of him, and he will be sorely missed.

Marsha, May you and your family find peace and comfort from the memories we are sharing and with your own.

Dear Marsha and Family,
So sorry to hear about the loss of your Dad. I am almost 59 years old and I remember Mr. Hymie fitting me with my first pair of Buster Brown shoes when I was a little girl. He was such a sweet generous man, and the Fair Store will not be the same without him. He always had a kind smile and a story ready every time you came into the store. I will treasure these wonderful memories that I have of him. You and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers. May God comfort you during this time of loss, and may you cherish all of the wonderful memories that you have.

Marsha, Dean, and family, I have known your Dad since I was a small child and have worked in the building next door to the Fair Store for 20 years, seeing him almost every work day for most of that time. I will always remember him as a kind and generous man that always had a story to tell. He had so much history of Perry in his head and it would be a treasure to have it written down. He was so dedicated to his business for which I always admired him. Our sympathy and prayers are with you all during this sad time. May God's love comfort you. Love, Clyde and Nancy Hendry

I remember Mr. Glickman so well, always ready to help serve our family there at "The Fair Store." A few years ago when my mother needed a Christmas gift for my father, she sent me to see "Hymie" to pick out a few shirts for my Dad. She said he knew what my Dad wore and what he would like. He was very helpful and, after we had selected a couple, I asked if he had a box in which to wrap the gifts. He went to the back of the store, rummaged for at least 15 minutes (I thought he had forgotten about me!), then returned proudly with a beautiful gift box featuring a lovely rendition of "Santa Claus!" That is a special memory for me since my parents passed away not too long after that. Being a native of Perry myself, I have fond memories of shopping in the store and receiving wonderful service from the Glickmans, especially "Hymie." Our thoughts are with his family at this time of loss.
