Atkinson Edwin (Ed) Pooser III

Atkinson Edwin (Ed) Pooser III passed away peacefully at home in Winter Garden on December 6, 2012 at the age of 96. He was born in Wauchula, FL on November 24, 1916, and was from a pioneer Florida family. His paternal grandfather was the first Judge of DeSoto County. His maternal great-grandfather, William Penn McEwen, was one of the early Methodist circuit riders in Florida.
Educated in Florida public schools, Ed attended the University of Florida.
On his birthday and Thanksgiving Day in 1938 he married the love of his life, Janette Jenkins of Apalachicola, FL.
Mr. Pooser was a long-time resident of Tallahassee, and a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church. He worked for the Public Service Commission for 33 years in the Transportation Department, rising through the ranks from Investigator to Director.
He organized a transportation law enforcement force second to none. Many states patterned their enforcement procedures after the Florida model. Mr. Pooser was a past president of the National Conference of State Transportation Specialists, and was a Florida Trucking Association "Man of the Year." His friend, the late Sen. Mallory Horne, referred to him simply as, "Mr. Transportation."
Mr. Pooser is survived by his wife, Janette. Children are Ned Pooser (Polly) of Franklin County and Jenny Brown (John Paul) of Winter Garden, seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by son, Jim Pooser of Tallahassee.

Mr. Pooser is buried in the family plot at Wauchula, FL.
