James Dexter (Buddy) Scruggs

J. D. (Buddy) Scruggs, 93, of Madison, Florida, died Thursday, January 31, 2013, at home. Buddy was born March 11, 1919, in Perry, Florida. The Scruggs family moved to Madison about 1925 where Buddy attended school. He graduated in 1937 from Castle Heights Military Academy in Lebanon, Tennessee. Buddy served in the U.S. Army in WWII where he worked in Europe in the area of military government. After his military service he attended University of Florida and earned a B.S. in Forestry. He worked as a forester and Registered Land Surveyor (PLS#963) in the north Florida area for 40 years and was considered an expert by his peers in retracing the original surveyors' footsteps and "proving" their section corners. Buddy served as a commissioner for the City of Madison for 21 years. He was also a founding member of Grace Presbyterian Church where he served as deacon, elder, and elder emeritus.

He was predeceased by his parents James Dexter Scruggs and Corrine Porter Scruggs; his brother Richard Martin Scruggs; sisters Corrine S. Winderweedle, Martha Curtis Lafitte, and Mary S. Brinson; and his first wife of 36 years, Frances Owens Scruggs.

He is survived by his wife of 28 years Peggy Blake Scruggs and daughters Mary Ann Sanders (Tim) and Frances Adleburg; grandchildren Alexis Adleburg (Ryan Pulfer), Ben Adleburg, and Sara Sanders; great grandson Michael Owen Pulfer; six nieces and nephews including Nate Curtis (BJ) of Madison. He is also survived by Peggy's children Michael Blake (Linda), Rachael Adams (Mike), and Suzanne Hooten (Gibson); and grandchildren Charissa Blake, Joshua Blake, Zachary Adams, Jared Adams (Allison), Caleb Adams, Caitlin Adams, Jacob Adams, Michael Hooten, and Joseph Hooten.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, February 4, 2013, at Grace Presbyterian Church in Madison, Florida, followed by burial in Oak Ridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the sanctuary beginning at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Grace Presbyterian Church, P. O. Box 76, Madison, Florida 32341.
