E. Daniel Butler

Dan Butler, aged 86, died at the Margaret Z. Dozier Hospice House on April 27, 2013.

The eldest of three children, Dan was born March 1927 in Buffalo, NY. He graduated from Canisius High School in Buffalo in 1945 and served in the US Navy 1945-46.
After the war Dan resumed his education under the GI Bill, attending Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, where he majored in music. At Duquesne, he met a fellow student, Ann Gallagher. The two were married in 1948. Dan's education was interrupted while he worked to support his rapidly growing family, which included 5 children born between 1949 and 1958.
Working during the days and attending classes at night, he earned a bachelor's degree in business in 1954 from Canisius College in Buffalo, where he and Ann had settled after their marriage.
Dan's work as a management consultant took his family to several different cities, including Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Atlanta, and Miami.
Dan loved the southern climate, and particularly enjoyed his four years in Miami, where he took up sailing. Dan loved language, and had a great wit and a talent for writing. He had a mellifluous, deep voice, and was urged by many to go into radio announcing for a career. He continued his hobby of playing the piano during his young adult years, and frequently serenaded his family with the music he loved.
Dan continued to enjoy jazz and Broadway show tunes all his life. He had a passion for cars that started in childhood.
Dan had many different occupations in his young life, among them a job plowing snow on the streets of Buffalo, a photography studio, a shampoo company whose product was fabricated in a bathtub, and homemade antacids that he sold to drugstores in Buffalo.
Dan had started his own bar code equipment company, The Danby Group, in north Atlanta in 1982, and passed on the business to his youngest daughter when he retired in 1997. He moved to Tallahassee to be near another two of his daughters in 2000.
Dan is survived by five children: Abby Straubhaar of Knoxville, TN; Norine Cardea of Tallahassee, FL; Tim Butler (Denise) of Knoxville, TN; Martha Paradeis (John Dozier) of Tallahassee; and Genie Ragin (John) of Cumming, GA. He is survived also by his beloved grandchildren, Lisa Blunck (Michael), Andre Straubhaar (Brenny), Peter Straubhaar, Jon Butler(Stephanie), Kristin Dozier, Vanessa Dozier Rowse (Scott), David Butler (Nicole), Carey Dozier (Tracy), Julian Dozier (Casey), Johnny Ragin and Sophie Alsop.
To carry on the circle of life, Dan reluctantly leaves his eleven adored great-grandchildren: Max Straubhaar, Madison Straubhaar, Nolan Blunck, Aaron Blunck, Makenzy Butler, Kyndall Butler, Callie Rowse, Samantha Butler, Jackson Rowse, Miles Dozier, and Blakely Butler. Dan's former wife and the mother of his children, Ann Butler, resides in Knoxville, TN.
A private memorial will be held by Dan's family at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Big Bend Hospice.
