Linnie Bell Devall

Linnie Bell Devall died on April 2 after a courageous battle with breast cancer. She was born on September 18, 1932 to Fletcher and Floy Green. She was a tomboy who enjoyed climbing trees, jumping rope, and playing sports. She graduated from Webster High School where she was an honor student and the drum majorette. Preston Devall fell in love watching her march on the field. After high school, they married and raised 6 children. He was a Baptist minister, and together they served churches in Wahoo, Fruitland Park, Brooksville, Weirsdale, Jasper, and Tallahassee. Preston and Linnie were married for 58 years before he died in 2008. They set a wonderful example of a loving, committed partnership.

Linnie had many talents. She had a beautiful voice and sang in the choir at the various churches they served. She was a skilled beautician who kept her family, friends, and customers looking nice. She enjoyed being in plays in high school, and writing and acting in skits at church. Linnie was a talented seamstress who made shirts for her sons and prom dresses for her daughters. Linnie loved being outdoors. At every place they lived, she planted flowers, shrubs, and trees. She enjoyed growing vegetables, and then canning or freezing them. She helped to build their retirement home and was always involved in home improvement projects. Above all, she was known for her nurturing spirit, willingness to help anyone, and openness and acceptance of new people and new ideas.

Linnie was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brother Russell Green. She is survived by her children - Laurence, Glen, David, Esther, Kenneth, and Marjorie - and their spouses as well as her siblings Laurence, Mitchell, and Vera. She leaves behind 15 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

The funeral will be April 5 at Woodrun Baptist Church in Tallahassee, with viewing and visitation with the family at 10:00 and the service at 11:00. A graveside service will follow at Ebenezer Baptist Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the , Big Bend Hospice, or Florida Baptist Children's Home.
