Ralph L. Thompson Sr. Obituary
Ralph Lindsay Thompson, Sr.

Ralph Lindsey Thompson, Sr., 92, went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, July 3, 2014. He died peacefully at home with family and caregiver, Toni McInnish, by his side. We are thankful for all the caregivers and Big Bend Hospice who attended him during his journey with Alzheimer's.

His homegoing service will be held Saturday, July 12, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Abbey Funeral Home, with visitation from 10:00 until 11:00 AM. Burial will follow at Tallahassee Memory Gardens.

Ralph was the firstborn son of Eugenia (Potts) and Jerome Lester Thompson. Born November 14, 1921 at home near Moultrie, Georgia, one of eight children, all were reared on a farm. After graduating from Moultrie High School, he enlisted in the Air Force serving his country during World War II. While stationed at Harlingen Air Force Base in Texas, he met and fell in love with his sweetheart, Lala Garza-Robles, and they were married in February 1945.

Following an honorable discharge from the service, he chose to farm for a number of years. The aspect he enjoyed the most was the wide open spaces of the fields. He moved to Tallahassee in 1956 and began working in the insurance industry. He retired from United Insurance Company of America in January, 1987 at age 65. After six months, being a people loving person, he sought employment with Publix. There, he thoroughly enjoyed interacting with the customers for almost 19 years seldom missing a day as he had a strong work ethic.

He had a gregarious personality, a wonderful sense of humor, and a winning smile. He was mechanically inclined and an avid gardener, who for decades had a productive vegetable garden. He always had a manicured yard graced with many beautiful flowers. He enjoyed bird watching and feeding the squirrels. Later in life, he greatly enjoyed sitting on his front porch with his beloved cat, Simba, observing the beauty of God's creation. He was an active member of Towne East Baptist Church where he served as a deacon as long as he was able. For years he contributed to many Christian ministries that worked with children and to those that helped spread the Gospel. He loved the Word of God faithfully reading it daily until a few weeks before his home going. Above all, his greatest love was The Lord Jesus Christ followed by his love for Lala, his beautiful wife and sweetheart of 69 years. A void will always be present in the hearts of those who loved him and he will be deeply missed.

He was predeceased by his son, Ralph Lindsey Thompson, Jr. (LT); his brothers, Zuba, Wilbur, Jack, and Waldo; and his sisters, Ann Sinkbell and Juanita Thigpen. Ralph is survived by his beloved wife, Lala; his three daughters, Gloria Parker (husband, Bob) of Apopka, Florida, Sandra Arthur (husband, Charlie) of Tallahassee and Linda Sack (husband, Marion) of Apopka, Florida; grandchildren, Ken, Keith, and Robby Parker, Gina Ruiz; Charles Arthur, Beth Buno, Jessica Wilkinson & and Shanalee Sweeney (Linda's daughter); Waylon, Brandon, Ethan, and Tori Thompson; 18 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Marjorie Bailey of Tallahassee.
