Caroline Cowart

Caroline Minis Rehm Cowart, 87, died October 22, 2015 at Hospice Savannah. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late Isaac Minis Jr. and Louise Cohen Minis and baby sister to the late Florance Minis Mall and Francis Minis Earle. Caroline attended Savannah High School and graduated in the Class of 1946. She married Raymond Maxim Rehm Jr. on September 6, 1947 at St. John's Episcopal Church in Savannah. Together, they had three children: the late Raymond Maxim Rehm III, Deborah Minis Rehm Tomberlin, and Dana Minis Rehm Lane. After Raymond's death in 1973, she enjoyed being a house mother at the Delta Gamma Sorority at Florida State University. In 1976, she married the late Gordon "Ulie" Cowart and moved back to Savannah. As a long time member of St. Francis of the Islands Episcopal Church, Caroline served in many different capacities including Alter Guild, ECW, Meals on Wheels and The Order of the Daughters of the King. She also served as a volunteer at Candler Hospital for 30 years, was a member of the UDC, the Happy Geechees, and The Republican Women's Group. Caroline also served on The Board of Directors for the Abrams Home and for the Tallulah Falls School. Her favorite pastimes included playing bridge with dear friends, solving crossword puzzles and working at the local voting precinct during elections.

She is survived by her two daughters, Deborah Tomberlin (Don) and Dana Lane (Vann), as well as nine grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren: Allison and Joey Ellis (Grace, Griffin, and Lily Ellis); Alaina and Brandon Owen (Dan and Bella); Catherine Haywood (Michael); Don Tomberlin, Jr.; Casey and Jarrod Hanks (Jayden, Evan, Avery, and Owen); Molly and Billy Wey (Cooper, Callan, and Lincoln); Whitney Lane; Joshua Lane; and Shelby Lane. Deborah & Dana;
My heart goes out to you for the loss of your Mom; I know you will miss her quick wit, her straight forward nature, and her hilarious sense of humor, as I will. You may not know it, but throughout my life, your Mom has been a 'stabilizer' for me during some good and some not-so-good times. She was there for my wedding when my Mom struggled with letting me go; she was there when I struggled with letting my Mom go at her passing; she talked me through some challenging situations over the years, and when others couldn't make it, she flew out to Texas to help me after Kelli was born. A couple of years ago I had the pleasure of spending a weekend with Caroline, just the two of us. I will always cherish that time together. I know she touched so many lives that we are not aware of - I am blessed to have been her niece and to have known her, and you are blessed to have had her as your Mom. I know you both loved her very much, and she, you.

Best,
Lynn G. McAuliffe
