Dorothy A. McClellan Mann

Dorothy Anita McClellan Mann, age 88, was born August 23, 1928 and departed this earth September 29, 2016. She was born in Gruver, Texas to Elmo McKewn McClellan and Elizabeth Beck McClellan.

Raised in a farming community she and her five siblings survived the Dust Bowl days and flourished to have long and interesting lives. As the land recovered and the two older brothers went off to fight in WWII, she and two of her older sisters were left to bring in the harvest with Granddad Mac. At the age of 13, she ran the combine while her sister Margurite, 14, drove the wheat truck. One broiled and the other baked, then they would switch places for another load.

Dorothy took a job bookkeeping while in college and earned a degree in Medical Technology from the University of Colorado Boulder. Her first job as a med tech was at Brackenridge Hospital in Austin, Texas where she met and married Dr. Charles K. Mann, Ph.D. Chemistry. Soon after, they moved to Tallahassee, Florida where Dr. Mann had taken a job at FSU to teach Analytical Chemistry. Meant to be a stop along his career, they soon fell for the small town southern charm and remained in Tallahassee to raise two children.

Dorothy enjoyed golfing, gardening, politics, and community service. Dorothy was a volunteer for Big Bend Hospice; was a member of the League of Women Voters of Tallahassee (serving as Treasurer on the State Board of LWV); was active in CONA; Sweet Adelines; supported the music programs at both FSU and TSO; and a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Tallahassee.

Dorothy M. Mann was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. C.K. Mann and is survived by her children, Richard K. Mann and Amy K. Mann.

Visitation to be held Tuesday, October 4, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Bevis Funeral Home, 2710 N. Monroe St., with burial at Roselawn Cemetery, 843 Piedmont Dr. to follow immediately with Charlotte Lehmann presiding. A memorial service will be held at a future date.
