Francis Joseph BURNS Jr. M.D.

BURNS, Francis Joseph Jr. M.D. 86, passed away suddenly July 11, 2013 at St Anthony's hospital. He grew up in St. Petersburg and was President of St. Petersburg High School Class of 1944. He graduated from Emory University in 1947 and was a member of Phi Delta Theta. He graduated from Emory University Medical School in 1951. He completed his residency in surgery at Bellevue Hospital in New York City. He served as a Lieutenant in the Medical Corp of the U.S. Navy. He was the Medical Officer in charge of surgery onboard the USS WASP. He was awarded a WWII Victory Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and a National Defense Service Medal. He was a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgeons and Fellow in the American College of Surgeons. He served as President of the Florida Association of General Surgeons and American Cancer Society, Chief of Staff at Edward White Hospital, and Vice President of The Pinellas County Medical Society. He was a member of the Polywogs, Knights of Columbus, Suncoasters, Sertoma, and the Dragon Club. He loved his family more than life itself and was a shining example of how a life should be lived. He enjoyed playing golf, sailing, and studying history. He had a sharp wit and kind word for everyone. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Mary Joye Burns; 2 sons, Steven Patrick Burns (Debra Hempel) and Thomas Michael Burns; one daughter, Cathleen Ann Burns (Chris Short); and 2 grandsons, Keto Little Burns and Andrew Joseph Burns-Short. He was predeceased in 1986 by his son, Francis Joseph Burns III. A viewing will be held Monday, July 15th from 57 pm at R. Lee Williams & Son Funeral Home at 3530 49th Street North, St. Petersburg, Florida 33710. Funeral mass will be Tuesday morning, July 16th at St Raphael's Catholic Church at 10 am.
