James Don PORTER

PORTER, James Don 73, of Dade City, passed away Tuesday, July 1, 2014. He was born to Martha M. and James H. "Wiregrass" Porter on Oct. 6, 1940 in Plant City. Don moved to Wesley Chapel with his family in 1946 and graduated from Pasco High School at the age of 16. He attended the University of Mississippi on a baseball scholarship, where he excelled academically and athletically. He was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity and was a baseball All-American. Upon graduation, Don was drafted by the Houston Colt .45s. Don entered the army and was stationed in Germany for a brief time. He played baseball while in the Army and coached the boxing team. Upon his discharge, he played another year of baseball then came home to work for Wayne Thomas at the Two Rivers Ranch and later, his family's ranch. He married Lajuana Whitlock on Oct. 22, 1970 and enjoyed 38 years of marriage with her until her death. He served on the Withlacoochee River Electric Cooperative, Inc. board and was a member of the University Club of Tampa. He worked closely with his family to help not only Pasco County but the entire Tampa Bay region grow through the legacy of the Wiregrass Ranch. He is survived by son, J.D. of Dade City; daughter, Quinn Miller (Matthew) of Odessa; grandchildren, Johannah, Cooper, and Lillian Jane; brother, William H. (Debby) of Dade City; sister-in-law, Lynda of Dade City; nephews and nieces, Colby Chandler (Mary Beth), Caitlin, Kelsey, Ava, Addison, Alexis and Rachel Porter, Haley and Hatcher Porter, all of Dade City. He is preceded in death by wife, Lajuana in 2008 and brother, Tom in 2010. A memorial service will be held at 2pm on July 12 at the Porter campus conference center of Pasco-Hernando State College at 2727 Mansfield Blvd, Wesley Chapel. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the PHSC Foundation, Inc. (10230 Ridge Rd., New Port Richey, 34654) or the Wiregrass Ranch Foundation (P.O. Box 290069, Tampa, 33687).
