Marvin BARKIN Obituary

84, died peacefully at his home in Tampa on February 7, 2018, in the presence of his family. He is survived by Trudy, his wife of 58 years; his children, Thomas Barkin (Robyn) of Atlanta, GA, Michael Barkin (Chantal) of Ottawa, Canada, Pamela Vargo (Daniel) of Falls Church, VA; and his grandchildren, Sam, Katie, Axel, Yulissa, Alexandra, and Max. Marvin was born in Winter Haven, Florida, on November 9, 1933, the son of Isadore and Jean Epstein Barkin. He grew up reading books in the back of his family's dry goods store and dreaming of becoming a lawyer. He graduated from Emory University in 1955 with a degree in Political Science, where he was president of Tau Epsilon Pi fraternity and Editor in Chief of the Emory Phoenix. He graduated from Harvard Law School with honors in 1958, moved to Miami to clerk for a judge where he met and married Gertrude (Trudy) in 1959. They moved to Tampa where Marvin joined the Fowler, White law firm as a litigator. Though he quickly became a partner, in 1970 he and nine other "Young Turks" left to create the firm now known as Trenam Law. A renowned litigator, he was often referred to by his peers as a lawyer's lawyer. He loved the courtroom and was named by various organizations "Lawyer of the Year" and was frequently included in the published listing of The Best Lawyers in America and Florida Super Lawyers. A member of the American College of Trial Lawyers and the American Law Institute, he led Trenam Law for decades and remained active there until his death. An unstinting advocate for legal education and qualifications, and a believer in the law as a noble profession, Marvin served as president of the Florida Board of Bar Examiners and as president of the National Board of Bar Examiners. He also chaired Florida's Judicial Qualifications Commission. He is remembered by his peers and family as a brilliant lawyer, an engaging storyteller, a generous mentor, a leader with unerring judgment, a passionate (and perpetually-disappointed) Tigers fan, a lifelong Democrat, and a terrible golfer always willing to keep Trudy (a much better golfer) company on the links. He was devoted to his family and friends, transferring to them his passions for history and politics. His words remain in their heads. A memorial service will be held at Congregation Schaarai Zedek, 3303 West Swann Avenue, Tampa on Sunday, February 11, at 12:30 pm, with a reception following. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Bay Area Legal Services. Condolences may be expressed at:

Not sure what to say?

February 24, 2018

Trudy, Tom, Pam, Michael and Family:
I am so sad to learn of Marvin's passing. He and I had a close bond, as my mentor, as my friend, as my cousin almost exactly 20 years older than I.
Yes, a terrible golfer, who nonetheless loved the game. I will miss him very much, but am heartened his suffering is now over.
Life is not fair, it is too short, it pains us so much when we lose someone we truly love.

All my love,
Sandy Estroff

My condolences to Trudy and her family upon Marvin's passing. One of the great attorneys in the Tampa Bay area has left his unique, indelible mark on the lawyers with whom he worked and opposed - setting a standard that all of us hope to achieve. May his legacy continue among his family, the community and the members of the Bar by retelling the many vignettes he shared with each of us over the years.

My sympathy to Marvin's wonderful wife, Trude, and the Barkin family.Marvin was such a fine man and lived his life so well: Fine attorney, fine husband and father, fine member of our community and a fine democrat, in all senses of the word. He left his mark.

Robert & Irene Potts

February 9, 2018

Dear Trudy and Family, Irene and Robert Potts send our deepest condolences to each of you upon the passing of our dear friend Marvin who will be greatly missed by you and by his many friends in Tampa and around the U.S, including us. Our friendship developed over many years of work together for the National Conference of Bar Examiners. Our collaboration and the good work of others resulted in some extraordinarily positive changes for that organization and and the people it serves. We shall always remember our good times together, in many different places, and will miss his incisive analysis of people and situations, and his dry wit and sense of humor. He was truly an extraordinary person who will be long remembered for his brilliant work and sensitive spirit.
