STAMBAUGH, Althea Fuller age 93, of St. Pete Beach, wife of the late Ted Stambaugh, passed away Jan. 24, 2014. She was born in Wheaton, IL, on Sept. 28, 1920, daughter of the late George and Patrice Butler Fuller. Following the market crash, George and Patty moved their four children to Mobile, AL, and later to Fair-hope where Althea attended the School of Organic Education whose headmaster was a protégé' of John Dewey's. Here Althea developed her lifelong loves of gardening and reading. While attending Louisiana State University, Althea met the love of her life, and on March 7, 1943, she and the handsome Navy ensign John Edward "Ted" Stambaugh were married. Following Ted's discharge from the Navy, Althea moved with Ted and their young son, John, to Ted's home state of Florida first to Miami, and later to St. Pete Beach where they would settle and raise their five children. Their love of St. Pete Beach led Ted to elected positions as city commissioner and mayor, and Althea to participation in Gulf Beaches Elementary PTA, and later the St. Pete Beach Garden Club and Meals on Wheels. In total, Althea called her beloved adopted city home for nearly 70 years. She never tired of watching the sun set over Blind Pass nor basking in the warm sun and sighing, "Ah, Florida!" Althea is survived by her loving family that meant the world to her, including sons, John, Rob (Debbie); daughters, Patrice Boyer (Tom), Holly Atkins (Steve); six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and many others who felt her deep love of children and came to call her "Nana." Althea was a longtime member of the Second Chu-rch of Christ, Scientist in St. Petersburg. Althea was predece-ased by her husband of 51 years, Ted; son, Rusty; and grandson, John III. A celebration of Althea's long and wonderful life will be held on Saturday, Feb. 15th, 2-4 pm, at Silas' Banquets, 5501 Gulf Blvd., St. Pete Beach. American Cremation Society.
