MENG, Donald R. We celebrate the life of Donald R. Meng, who passed away at the age of 90 Jan. 9, 2014 at his home in Tampa. Don was born in Abington Township, PA Aug. 10, 1923 to Raymond and E. Mae Meng. He first started working at his mother and father's gas station and store in Springhouse, PA. As a Boy Scout he attained the rank of Eagle Scout, and he played football at Ambler High School. In 1944, he married his wife of 53 years, Betty Bortz, shortly before being deployed to the Pacific theatre in World War II. He served as a unit photographer in the war, participating in the documentation of the destruction in Hiroshima. He returned to finish his college education at Penn State University, graduating with a degree in Electrical Engineering. After a few years as a lineman with the local telephone company, Don joined Bell Labs in overseeing military projects, which took him to Boston, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC. Don had remained in the Army Reserves until 1951, as a Second Lieutenant, and was promptly activated to serve in the Korean War as an engineer. In 1964, Don was appointed Vice President of the American Stock Exchange in New York, where he oversaw the introduction of the exchange's first computer system. In 1974, he accepted a position as the director of Data Processing for Tampa Electric Company. He went into semi-retirement in 1982. Since his retirement, he had several part time jobs, including work for the Service Core of Retired Executives, and many years of teaching computer application classes at the Learey Technical Center, and teaching and directing bridge. Don's faith was always important to him, as he served as Sunday School Superintendent at several churches, and worked on a committee that started the Kirkwood Presbyterian Church in Fairfax, VA. He is a member of the Palma Ceia Presbyterian Church. Among his other achievements are being a founding board member of the Mantua Hills Swim Club in Virginia, and several honors from his grandson's Boy Scout troop. Following the death of his first wife, Don married his second wife, Barbara Meng, in November 2001. Don is survived by his wife, Barbara Meng, four children and two stepchildren, Sharon Horton and her husband of Lakeland, Dave Meng and his wife of The Villages, Steve Meng and his wife of Arvada, CO, Andy Meng of Bloomingdale, Cindy Barksdale of Atlanta, GA, and John Barksdale and his wife, of St. Petersburg, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
