KOENIG, Paul R. 69, passed away March 13, 2013. A lifelong Floridian, Paul was born in Miami, and grew up in Temple Terrace, where his family was very active in the community. In his childhood, Paul developed a deep appreciation for Florida's natural beauty, which remained with him throughout his life. He attended the University of Florida and graduated with a degree in Broadcasting from the University of South Florida. After graduation, he served as Interim Station Manager for WUSF radio. There, he applied his love and knowledge of classical music as an on-air host. Paul worked at WEDU-TV and the then CBS affiliate, WTVT, Channel 13. At WTVT, he was quickly promoted to Senior Producer-Director, working with the news department, directing commercials, special projects, and preseason football games when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers began operations. Paul later worked with the GTE Telephone Company in the Video Production Department. As a Freelance Director and video editor, he worked with many clients, including Busch Gardens, Bravo Cable Network (The Directors), and Speed TV Network (The American Muscle Car). A standout in his profession, Paul earned distinction throughout his career, including a Telly Award, The Aurora Gold Award, a Cine Golden Eagle, and an Ernie award from the Big 13 Historical Committee, honoring his 15 years of creative broadcasting direction at WTVT. Paul had a passion for auto racing. He and a group of friends volunteered yearly as wrecker crew members for the 12 hours of Sebring endurance race. Charged by his social and political beliefs, Paul committed himself to both local and national politics, volunteering at the Democratic National Convention this past September. Paul was a Bay Area sports fan, but as a lifelong Florida Gator rooted most enthusiastically for the Orange and Blue. He was an avid reader who loved learning, had a keen intellect, and a true appreciation for a good gin martini. Paul was a resident of Clearwater Beach for over 40 years, where he and his wife, Kathy raised two sons and formed many lasting friendships. Paul is preceded in death by parents, Paul C. and Daisy Koenig.
