Rose Frances SPICOLA


SPICOLA, Rose Frances PHD, Cornaro Professor Emerita, noted educator and author, passed Nov. 21, 2012. She was born in Tampa on July 18, 1928, a graduate of Hillsborough High and Tulane University's H. Sophie Newcom College, she earned her Master's and Doctorate degrees in education and reading at Florida State University. Dr. Spicola was a member of The University of South Florida's Charter faculty staff, later teaching at Virginia's Longwood College before taking a permanent position at Texas Women's College in Denton until her retirement. To honor her memory, Texas Women's College conducts an International Reading Forum annually, named for her. Dr. Spicola was a Fulbright Scholar serving one year overseas. She is survived by her beloved sister, Judy Ann Spicola Bokor (Richard); sister, Josephine Spicola; her brothers, Angelo C. Spicola (Joyce), Carlo "Charles" G. Spicola Jr. (Antoinette); and many loving nieces & nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to your choice of charities or The Humane Society of Tampa.
