Obituary

McMILLEN, Dr. Ruth Ann 83, passed away on Friday, Dec. 20, 2013 in Sun City Center, FL. Born July 24, 1930, in Ada, OH to Edward and Ossie McMillen, she graduated from Ohio Northern University with a Bachelor's degree in education and science. She received her Master's degree in education from Cleveland State University and her PhD in education from the University of Sarasota, FL. She utilized her degrees to teach elementary schools in Lakewood, OH, Honolulu, HI, Buyukad, Turkey, Tampa, Wimauma and Pinecrest, FL. She also taught at HCC, Ybor Campus. She ended her teaching career in Buyukad, Turkey, which she considered her second home. She was a member of the Kappa Delta Pi Teaching Honor Society, even serving a term as President. She was also honored as their 1992 Educator of the Year. Not only was she recognized by her peers, but she was endeared by her students. Ruth Ann was an avid world traveler and visited 6 continents. Some of her travels took her to Prague, Shanghai, Dubai, New Zealand, Iceland, Norway and Russia. After retirement she served others in her community and was seldom seen alone. She went out of her way to include friends who needed transportation to doctor appointments or to take them to a special restaurant. She was a people person who valued many deep relationships with her neighbors, students and their families. She loved sharing stories with and about her students. Ruth Ann was an avid Ohio State University fan and loved all sports. It was often said, Ruth would talk to a wall if it would answer her. She marched to her own drummer and followed causes close to her heart. She read every book, magazine, newspaper and periodical she could get her hands on. And she was always writing an article or working on a book. She often suggested her students write a book and encouraged them to do so. Survivors include cousins, Bob (Jean) McMillen of California, Evonda (Dan) Machir of Michigan, other loving family members and countless friends. A Memorial Service will be held 10 am. Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014, at Trinity Baptist Church, Sun City Center, FL.
