McEWEN, Wm. Gavin 56, of Indian Shores, died of lung cancer Aug. 3, 2013 at Bay Pines VA Hospital. He is survived by his father, Robert Gavin McEwen, former mayor of the town; younger sister, Margaret E. "Megan" Britt, of Dacula, GA; and two nephews, John W. Britt of Georgia, and Sgt. Robert E. Britt, US Army, Boulder, CO. Gavin was addicted to cigarettes and was a "friend of Bill". He was born in Waukegan, IL, while Robert, a career Marine, was stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center. Gavin was graduated from Roswell, GA High School and attended the University of Georgia and later, USF after four years in the U.S. Navy. He served aboard the Amphibious Assault Ship USS Cleveland and the Guided Missile Destroyer USS Chandler as a "Plank Owner" and a Personnellman 2d Class. Most of his Navy time was spent in the Pacific and Orient, the ships having been based in San Diego. He was employed at Peet Marwick in St. Petersburg and as warehouse manager for an office furniture company. Private funeral services will be held at Bay Pines VA cemetery.
