Katharine Hoag "Kay" MULLEN


MULLEN,Katharine Hoag "Kay" 86, appropriately born on Feb. 14, 1927 to The Very Reverend Harold Brown Hoag and Eunice Seitz Hoag, died peacefully and courageously on May 8, 2013, surrounded by her adoring family. She graduated from St. Mary's Episcopal School in Memphis, TN, and attended Randolph Macon Woman's College and Southwestern (Rhodes) College. She was born in Chicago, IL, and resided in Iowa and Wisconsin before moving to Memphis at age 12. She came to Tampa in 1947, where her parents were relocated from Memphis and her father became Rector of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. She married Harris H. Mullen in 1949 and has since resided in Tampa where she raised four children. She spent 59 years alongside her beloved husband quietly supporting him in his careers at Florida Trend Magazine, Trend House Gallery, Ybor Square, and lastly as his best editor and critic as a writer and novelist. She volunteered and belonged to many organizations including Golf View Garden Club, Junior League of Tampa, H.B. Plant Museum Society founding member, Tampa Museum, Ybor City Museum Society, Tampa History Center, & Tampa Ybor Railway Society. She was a member of the Tampa Yacht and Country Club, & the Blowing Rock Country Club. She spent the last 50 summers in her favorite place on earth, Blowing Rock, NC, where she brought not only her good cheer & conversation, but also shared her favorite pastime, cooking for her many friends. Mrs. Mullen was predeceased by her husband, Harris H. Mullen in 2008. She is survived by her four children, Julie Lux (Steve), Sandy Moore (Jeff), Nancy Griscom (Don) and Harris H. Mullen Jr.; seven grandchildren, Courtney Trout (Jeff), Michael Shea (Leila), Carrie DeLisi, William Griscom, Katharine (Katie) Griscom, Raymond Mullen, and Lynsay Katharine Moore; four great-grandchildren, Drew Bryant, Caroline and Emma Katharine Trout, and Reilly Thibault Shea; and brother-in-law, Charles G. Mullen, and Virginia L. Mullen, sister-in-law. A memorial service will take place on Saturday, May 11th, 11 am, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 509 E. Twiggs Street, Tampa.
