BENSON, Sgt. Richard S.

28, died Thursday March 10, 2018 following a tragic automobile accident. His funeral service will be held this Friday at St. James The Apostle Catholic Church, New Port Richey, FL at 10 am, followed by interment at Meadowlawn Memorial Gardens, New Port Richey, FL, followed by a memorial reception at Hooters on Treadway Drive, New Port Richey, FL. Richard was born January 15, 1990 in Laguna Beach, California to Timothy and Barbara Benson. He graduated from River Ridge High School, in New Port Richey FL in 2008. Following high school he enlisted in the United States Army. He proudly served his nation as a combat medic for five years, including deployments to Afghanistan in such capacity. He retired, a combat wounded veteran, in 2013. He is often spoken of as the bravest, kindest, and loyalist man those who knew him would ever know. Richard is survived by his mother, Barbara Etten; his stepmother Beverly Benson; and his siblings, Alexandra Cooke, Jessica Mellerupp, Christopher Davis, Cassie Ochsenfeld, and Timothy J. Benson Jr., along with his PTSD service dog Charlie. Richard was known for being the best brother, uncle, and friend to those who knew him, and was a true light in this world.
