Robert Volk Obituary

VOLK, Robert H. Jr. "Mickey" 54, charts a new course. A St. Petersburg treasure, Robert Hartness Volk, Jr., otherwise known as Mickey to family and friends, began his solo voyage to a far distant island on Sunday, March 27th, 2011. The nickname Mickey was given to him by his father because of the latter's respect for former New York Yankee slugger, Mickey Mantle. This former military brat, born in Augsburg, Germany, on Sept. 28th, 1956, has called St. Petersburg home since the late '60s, which started a love affair with the city and its surrounding waters. He attended Northeast H.S., graduated in the class of 1974, and graduated from USF with a degree in anthropology. After high school, he enlisted for six years in the Army, primarily as a medic, stationed initially in South Korea, then to Eniwetok Atoll in the Marshall Islands, and finally to Fort Sam in San Antonio, TX, where he was a part of the implementation of the first helicopter air-medic program for hospitals. Once back in St. Petersburg, he embarked on a colorful career path from the restaurant business to entertainment as a concert producer and promoter with Last Minute Productions, bringing name acts to Janus Landing and Al Lang Field. One of his signature acts of kindness was providing carnations to all women attendees. A constant love throughout his life was being on and surrounded by the water. This love of water and sailing was only exceeded by his love and devotion to family and raising his two children. Mickey is survived by his wife, Joann, of 25 years, celebrated on March 22; his daughter, Miranda; his son, James Mackland; his father, Ret. Army Colonel Robert H. Volk, Sr., of Seminole; his sister, Sheryn Volk, of St. Petersburg and his uncle Bruce Volk Sr., of Columbia, SC. So we bid Bon Voyage to our beloved father, husband, brother, son, friend, captain, and most lovable pirate whose bounty yielded the richest treasure of them allhearts. With charm, exuberance, and wit, he stole our hearts. Funeral Service will be held at 1 pm on Saturday, April 2nd, at Holy Family Catholic Church. In Mickey's memory, donations can be made to Suncoast Hospice of Florida. Anderson-McQueen Family Tribute Center 727-822-2059

Sheryn, I'm so sorry to hear of your brothers passing. If it is any consolation you can rest assured he is the arms of his Lord. I did not know him very well, but any time you lose a family member as I have recently experienced it is very hard to get through that lose. So, I wish you my deepest sympathy. Take care.

I met Mickey and Joann while living upstairs from them in Lynn Lake Arms in the mid 80's and always enjoyed the cookouts and hanging on his patio. I worked for him doing security for Last Minute Productions and will miss his wit and humor. My deepest sympathies to the Volk family.

From some of your old high school friends (Bob Kroll, Jeff Moores, Jerry Fletcher), our prayers are with the family.

I have known Mickey and Sheryn since high school. Though I only saw Mickey at high school reunions and a couple other functions over the years, I always remember him as the life of the party, and a great person. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Volk family at this time.

My deepest sympathies to Joann and the family. Although we drifted apart over the years, my best high school memories always involved Mickey. Last time I saw Mickey was at El-Cap a few years ago. I was there last week and I wondered how my friend was. Like the many lives Mickey touched, including mine, you will be missed and never forgotten. May God bless your family.

I was deeply saddened to read about Mick's passing in the times today. We were classmates in the St. Pete Jr. College Music Program in the early 80's and became roommates for a while when he bought a house in Southeast St. Pete (I could tell you some stories). We lost touch with each other and I now wish we hadn't. The one thing that always impressed me about Mick was his compassion and selflessness. I'm very sorry for those who were close to him. I know his passing will leave each of you with a void that will never be filled.

Mickey was one of the most unforgettable people I've ever met. He made me smile, he made me crazy--but he was always a true optimist! There is a little less sunshine and laughter in the world without you, Mick. Joann, Miranda, Mack--you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Joann, Mac,and Miranda: So sorry to hear of Mickey's passing. He was definitely unique, full of life and I always enjoyed our conversations. The world is less bright without him. Don't know where this came from, but would like to share it with you.

Joann, Like so many others who were drawn to Mickey by his charm & charisma, it was w/profound saddness when I learned of his death. Though it's been many moons since I've seen y'all, I always smiled whenever I thought of Mickey. One thing for sure: There was NEVER a dull moment when Mickey was present! Your sorrow is my sorrow.
