SMITH, Rebecca Davies, passed away on Easter morning, April 20, 2014. She was born on January 20, 1925 in Tampa, and is the granddaughter of Edwin Lambright, who was editor of the Tampa Tribune for 55 years. Rebecca was a lifelong resident of Tampa and attended Gorrie Elementary, Wilson Junior High School, Plant High School, and Florida State College for Women (FSU), where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. At the age of 18, Rebecca married Armin H. Smith, Jr., her lifelong sweetheart for 69 years, until his death in January 2013. Rebecca spent a brief period of time in New York City, where she worked as a fashion model. She had a very adventurous spirit and obtained her pilot's license at the age of 16. She was also a talented artist and designed and sewed beautiful hand-beaded gowns, including her daughter Patty's dresses when she was Queen of Gasparilla. She was also very active in the Junior League of Tampa and was a skilled bridge player and woodcraftsman. She also enjoyed snow skiing, playing golf, and spending wonderful summers with her children and grandchildren in Highlands, North Carolina. All who knew Rebecca loved her quick wit and humor, sense of style and beauty, enjoyment of life, love for her family and friends, and kindness to all those around her. During her last years, she enjoyed her many friends at Canterbury Towers, especially her lifelong best friend, Joy Bell. She is survived by her three children, A. Frank Smith, Patricia Smith Walkup (Mike Walkup), and Stephen F. Smith (Betsy Urbanski Smith); her seven grandchildren, Shannon Walkup Edmeads, Bonnie Smith Martinez, Caroline Walkup, Rick Smith, Natalie Smith, Sarah Beth Smith, and Scott Smith; and her great-grandchild, Smith Edmeads. She is pre-deceased by her husband, Armin H. Smith, Jr., her son, Richard Smith, and her daughter-in-law, Debbie Hiers Smith. A memorial service will be held at 1 PM on Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at Palma Ceia Presbyterian Church, 3501 W San Jose St, Tampa, FL 33629. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Voices for Children of Tampa Bay, 2107 W. Cass St, Tampa, FL 33606. Please sign the online guestbook at
