Phyllis Felix Obituary

FELIX, Phyllis Nadine Phyllis Felix (also known as Phyl, Gramma, and other words of affection) was our "rock" - the center of our family. Nothing meant more to her than being with her family and close friends. She met her beloved David when they were both teachers in Columbia City, IN. On their first date, David proclaimed that one day he would marry her! After 63 years of marriage, they still appreciated the love and happiness of being together. They supported each other -without always agreeing- through decisions like purchasing a lot directly on the Gulf of Mexico in the early 1970s for $14,000 (though Phyl gasped that it cost nearly as much as the house they were currently living in). For many years, cocktail hour started promptly at 6 pm, and all the events of the day were shared with each other at that time. Traveling to Maine and out West became limited in recent years, but produced wonderful memories. No place compared to life at home, though, with the beautiful sunsets each night off the Gulf and with kids and grandkids living nearby. Phyl and daughter, Beth, were best friends. Their interests were similar - they loved gardening, going to art shows, shopping, and sharing time together. Her favorite shops were not the large department stores, but the smaller specialty stores they found together - the ones that would know her by name. Phyl's son, Dave Jr, always made her laugh. They had a very special bond and appreciation of each other. They did fun things together - taking rides on the golf cart, watching home-made videos of the family, and purchasing perhaps the only material item Phyl ever coveted in life - her PT Cruiser. Then along came the granddaughters, and Gramma's life was complete. Firstborn, Lauren, arrived the same year that Phyllis retired from teaching and they formed an immediate closeness that is still alive 21 years later. Trips to Busch Gardens, the Clearwater Aquarium, and - of course - shopping were regular activities for the two of them. Phyl's love of reading was also passed on to Lauren, as they visited the library and read together frequently. Allison was born 2 ½ years later and now a trio was formed. The girls learned from Gramma's artistic talents and enjoyed doing crafts together, going to the library and making regular trips to the mall. Gramma affectionately called each of them "Nuisance #1". Her children's marriages brought special in-laws into her life. She appreciated the dry sense of humor and multiple talents of her son-in-law, Chuck (Wessell). When Chuck and Beth married, a special relationship was created with their daughter, Laura, as well as other of Chuck's children. Her daughter-in-law Ellen was more like a second daughter, as they loved to talk about "the girls - Lauren and Allie". Ellen was wonderful about keeping Phyllis up-to-date with all their accomplishments and activities - and that meant the world to Phyl. Despite less-than-perfect health for the past 5 years, Phyllis never complained, and always had a smile on her face. This happy personality made it easy to love her - and she was loved by many. Her success as a teacher is still felt, as she is recognized by many students who continue to thank her for her caring and teaching ability. Her musical background helped lead the choir at church, as she brought out the best in each of her vocalists. Her love and nourishing of her children and grandchildren is evident in their lives today. Phyllis passed away at home in Tarpon Springs on June 11, 2010 at age 85. She will be missed tremendously by all of us. In addition to her family in Florida, she is survived by her beloved sister, June Brock and husband Bob, and her younger brother Tom Eberhard all of Indiana, as well as many loved nieces and nephews. A celebration of her life will be held in the fall. If interested, please feel free to make a contribution in her honor to the Tarpon Springs Public Library.

Dear Felix Family,
I was just thinking of my favorite ever teacher and googled her to learn of her passing a decade ago. I will never forget my epic 2nd grade year with her at Ozona. The poems, drawings and our classroom fish! Please know that her spirit continues to live on in all her students. Forever grateful, Emily Gellady Rakowski

I am just now learning of my dear friend's passing. I have so many wonderful memories of our days together at Jordan Conservatory. We were room mates, close friends, and Phyllis was matron of honor at our wedding (Price and Mary Jane) in the Butler University Chapel.
I treasure those memories...

Phyllis's life made a difference -- a profound and positive difference in every person with whom she had contact. What a legacy that is! Phyllis's zest for life, her vivacious personality, and her sense of humor were just some of her gifts. She also had a way of bringing out the best in students and teachers -- actually in everyone, family members included. She was a great motivator. Her creativity sparked the imagination of many children. Every time her memory surfaces, I picture her with a big smile, and I can still hear her joking and laughing. She was a special friend. Phyllis excelled in all the roles in her life -- wife, mother, grandmother, friend, teacher. Her influence still lingers... she will always be with us. God blessed all of us with Phyllis's presence. What a beautiful difference one single life made!

My dear friend Phyllis. What an inspiration you were to me. First as a teacher, then a friend and also as a parent. You have left with many wonderful memories for me. I will never forget our great times at Sandy Lane Elementary, our trip to Cost Rica, our many "cheers" evenings on sunset cruises on the boat or at our homes, or your endless patience teaching two of my sons!
I know you would agree that your greatest legacy is your wonderful family. You were loved by so many people and will be missed.

I was very sorry to hear about the passing of Mrs. Felix, who taught me in second grade in 1971-72. She was quite simply one of the finest teachers I have ever had. I still remember her boundless energy and her natural enthusiasm for learning. I can’t remember much about the curriculum from second grade, but I can remember that Mrs. Felix loved learning and wanted us to love it, too, for its own sake. I now teach college mathematics, and I try to channel Mrs. Felix whenever I can. When my students say that I have a remarkable enthusiasm for math, I know where I learned to love learning: among other places, in a portable classroom at Ozona Elementary School. Excellent teaching is hard work for teachers and a generous gift for students. I was blessed to have Mrs. Felix as a teacher. Thank you.

So very sorry to hear the sad news of Aunt Phyllis' passing. She was such a lovely person! I so enjoyed my trips to see her in Florida. I especially remember my visit to her classroom, and the joy that she brought to the children. She touched many lives. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Love, Tamara

When my Dad married Beth, I got not only a great step mother I got great step grandparents. Over time the "step" was removed and replaced with friend. I will always cherish my memories of Phyl.

I was also a student of Mrs. Felix at Ozona Elementary. Even though Mrs. Felix has left us physically, she will always live in the hearts of her students. There are so few on this planet who manage to touch so many lives in such a way. She made Silverstein's poems live. I know I read them today with her voice in my head. She will be missed but never forgotten.

I got to know Phyllis when I worked with Dr. Kimbrough in the 80's and 90's. I always loved it when I saw her name on the schedule. She was always happy and such a fun person to chat with, and of course, very interesting. I have not worked in the practice more 15 years, but I can still see her smiling face. My prayers and thoughts are with her loving family.

So sad to hear the news...I was introduced to her in the 2nd grade, 1979, and can say that she was my favorite teacher.....She will always have a special place in my heart...a teacher, person who had a tremendous impact on my life and someone whom I'll never forget! Thanks for everything, Mrs. Felix...you'll be missed!!

I was a student of Mrs. Felix and have never forgotten her or her reading of poems and books. I can still recite at least three of Shel Silverstein's poems. My daughter is going into 2nd grade next year and just yesterday I was telling her about my favorite teacher Mrs. Felix. How special she was and how she is the one that we have to thank for my daughter's love of Shel Silverstein. I told her that you remember your favorite teachers forever, as I will remember Mrs. Felix.

So sad to hear about Phyllis' passing. She had such a wonderful spirit - I always thought she would live forever. The memory of her, Dave and Happy Hour is one that I will cherish.
