BICKEY, Vasil 74, died Aug. 23, 2013, in St. Petersburg, where he had lived since moving from Bridgeport, CT, in 1975. Bickey was born May 28, 1939, in Bridgeport, the third son of the late Mary C. Bickey and Daniel Bickey Sr. He graduated from Bullard Havens High School in 1959, where he was a star football player. A highlight of his high school career was his 81 yard kickoff return in the Thanksgiving Day game against West Haven High School, which won the game. Bickey served in the U.S. Navy for four years as a Seabee, and later as a Petty Officer. He married Claire Boudreau of Quebec City, Canada, in 1969, and was married for forty-four years. They have four children, Michael Bickey, Erica Gunnels, Jennifer Bickey, and Andrea Plant; they have four grandchildren, Julia Bastow, Thomas Gunnels, Lydia Plant, and Allison Plant. Other than his wife, children and grandchildren, he is survived by two brothers, Danny and Nick. He was preceded in death by his eldest grandchild, Alexandria Gunnels, his eldest brother Ernest "Billy," and his brother Theodore "Teddy." Bickey was a successful entrepreneur, owning several businesses, including Bickey Construction Co., which had the block and brick contract on Tropicana Field, home of the Tampa Bay Rays, and was the general contractor for the City of St. Petersburg's Ice Palace. He built many high rise residential buildings on the Gulf Coast, and also many schools and government buildings. Bickey was of the Greek Orthodox faith. He was buried with military honors at Bay Pines National Cemetery. Services were private. Donations in memory of Vasil Bickey may be made to the Family Kitchen at Bay Pines Hospice, which provided great comfort to the family during Mr. Bickey's last days.
