McGUINNESS, Edward W., 91, died peacefully at home in Tampa, Fla. on Friday evening, surround-ed by family. Ed was born in New York City and raised in Rego Park, New York. Early in life he was a semiprofessional football player, and a Golden Gloves prizefighter. Ed married Mary Moynihan in 1942 and then served in the U.S. Navy during WW II in the South Pacific aboard the USS Mindanao, as a code man. He joined IBM after graduating from Queens College in New York and was the first salesman ever hired by the company from a public university, rather than a private one. Ed joined IBM just three years after the first computer had been developed in 1946 and enjoyed a successful 39-year career with them in sales and management in New York, Florida and Seoul, Korea. In 1987 Ed retired from IBM to Tampa and consulted in the information technology arena for a number of years while also serving on various non-profit boards including the Society for the Prevention of Blindness. In 1995, after 53 years of marriage, Ed lost his beloved first wife, Mary, to emphyzema. He was later reunited with his high school girlfriend, Anne Fitzgibbon, and they enjoyed over 15 years of marriage together. Ed often said he was a lucky man to have loved two women in his life and to have been able to marry them both. Ed was predeceased by his first wife Mary Moynihan McGuinness and by two of their seven sons, twins Michael and Kevin McGuinness. Ed was also predeceased by his parents William and Ann McGuinness of Rego Park, New York and by his brother Neil McGuinness of the United States Marine Corps who was killed in action at Tinian in the South Pacific during World War II. Ed is survived by his second wife Anne McGuinness, and by seven children from his first marriage to the late Mary McGuinness. Ed's surviving children include: William, (Kathy) of Pleasant Hill, California and their three children Matthew (Lisa), Kelly and husband Artie, Brendan (Leanne) and four of Ed's great-grandchildren; son Neil (Kathie) of Atlantic Beach, Florida and their three sons, Kevin, Luke(Jenny) and Brian and one great-grandson; son Dan and his four children Jennifer, John (Amy), Timmy, Katie Mears (Michael Mears) and four great-grandchildren; son Patrick (Alice) of Jacksonville, Florida and their son Sean; son Brian and (Linda) of Miami, Florida; daughter Peggy McGuinness of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida; daughter Maura Grady of Tampa Florida and her two children, Michael and Cailen, and late son Michael's daughter, Kara McGuinness and her son. Ed is also survived by his sister Colette Stampe of Long Island, NY and sister Maureen Townley , his two step-daughters, Nancy Brant and Mary Jane Walsh and their children. A viewing will be held at Blount & Curry, 6802 Silver Mill Dr., Tampa 33635 on Friday between 3 and 5pm and 6 to 8 pm. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Paul's Church at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
